    Exactly, and not to get all over analytical (too late!), but "Workin'onit" came on in the car today and you can hear it say "fade me" or whatever up until the very last time it runs through, then he did something to it to make it say "save me".

    he didn't really do anything special to make it say "save me", it's just a different sample from the same song. 10cc. i had that damn record for eons and never would've thought of doing what dilla did with it he really didn't even do a whole lot to it IMO that's just how the record goes when you cut out all the wack singing parts feel me? so dope

    Speaking of samples, I need to know what "I Can't Stand To See You Cry" is from. Whatnauts? It sounds like something I already have. Same thing with "You're gonna Want Me Back". Can't place them but I know I've heard em somewhere.

    the sample sources are hot too. and the technical aspect is sick.
    I agree that it is an inspirational album.

    As far as the Madlib - Beat Konducta vol. 1-2 comparison, I think Donuts is stronger but they sorta work as complimentary pieces.

    and i guess madlib had something to do with the mix/mastering cus theres way too much compression for me.

    Really?? You think Madlib's stuff is overcompressed?? I guess some of his more recent beat work for MCs like MED, Wildchild, Oh No, etc is pushing the needle kinda hot. But I always thought of him as more of a 'ah let's just use the beat tape version, sounds good enough. fuck mastering!' type of dude. I remember reading an interview with Peanut Butter Wolf where he was talking about how much trouble they had mixing and mastering the Further Adventures of Lord Quas because it was alll over the place sonically when Madlib gave it to the label.

But dilla's drums epitomize the kind of live feeling im talking about in that other post. Not that everyone should just ape his style, but those little things that make producers mad often times make the record hot for everyone else.

But dilla's drums epitomize the kind of live feeling im talking about in that other post. Not that everyone should just ape his style, but those little things that make producers mad often times make the record hot for everyone else.

    Dilla's drums had more of a live feel owing to the slightly off mentality that he used when building tracks - as in a high hat that's just a second slower than a kick, mimicking the lapses a real drummer would do/execute - complemented by the use/chop of the full run of hits from a drum break versus just the 1st set encountered; Madlib's material just sounds sloppy overall - w/ little regard if any for swing and drums that neither snap nor hit, but come across as clumsy...

    you got me wrong. i wasnt talking about dilla in that post, i was talking about madlibs stuff. i have to admit i dont exactly check for his stuff anymore, but back when i did most of his shit was mastered with heavy compression. i mean thats part of his style. it makes alot more sense on madlibs stuff than dilla if you ask me. i was just expecting dillas shit to hit a little harder like hes spoiled us with in the past. and yeah dillas shit is all about the swing, never claimed anything else. but i do think hes leaning to much towards a stressed groove on here, and it makes perfect sense. he was in alot of pain when he did this release, and you can feel it in the beats. if you think dillas that "trendy off beat shit" youre lucky, cus you've probably not heard whats going on in the underground right now.
