  • Here's one that will have AP grasping for his twiddle stick. Jerry's pancho is killing it on Playboy after Dark from 1969. Hef's HIFI in the background is insane.

    Playboy after Dark

Jerry's Drug Rug is ridiculous. bring back the poncho

Their puss psych and wuss country rock stylings did not impress me.
To use a faux-ism, their music is "sacless."

there's nothing really offensive about their music

    sadly, it's just the fans

    Demurring generalities...
I went to my first Grateful Dead concert
with a Hells Angel woman named "Sunshine."

She had fire engine red hair
Suicide scars all over her wrists
Heroin scars all over her arms
    And FIRE in her eyes.

She was the embodiment of what Outlaw Bob
    (Sunshine's "old man")
    Called, "one fucking crazy bitch."

Sunshine and I met when I was "away."
She insisted I join her and another woman
in attendance at the Dead show
(both women were at least 30 years my senior)
I was all of 14 at the time.

They made fuck jokes about me in the car
on the way to the ampitheater
    I mostly just smiled.
    Sunshine was pretty intimidating

    Something happened?
    I honestly can't remember what
    Cops were involved.
Sunshine and the other woman ended up leaving me
In a bank parking lot in some sketchy neighborhood of Palo Alto
I slept in the bushes with this girl
    We met at the show

    I stole 3 apples
    And a case of Coca-Cola
    From a nearby Safeway

The girl and I split the apples
And used the Coca-Cola as a pillow
After wrapping a shirt around it.

    Some cop saw us.
    Questioned us.
And told us we had better
    find somewhere else to stay
I was like, "Cop, I don't even know where I am."

    He gave us $3
    And a ride to Denny's
    Instruction:
    "Sit here 'til sunrise...
Then hitchhike away like the rest of the deadheads."

That was the night that I made my first
    Roadside Hitchhiker Sign???
    Using Denny's coloring crayons
    "EAST" it said
I remember drawing a flower on it
Thinking some hippy chick would be into that

    We got home.
That girl and I remained friends
She's married to a Zimbabwean now

    I saw Sunshine later
    She asked how everything went
    When I told her
    She seem thrilled.
"That's the way it's supposed to be."

    I still listen to
    And love
    "Easy Wind"
    From their Workingman's Dead

If you've never passed out in the parking lot of a Dead concert from sleep-deprivation and excessive mescaline intake, you've never lived.

    Pigpen deserves more discussion...

pigpen is what got me into the dead... i worked at a head shop where one of the house rules was that one CD out of the 5 in the changer had to be the Dead at ALL TIMES... so, i quickly familiarized myself with their whole catalog so i could find the CD's that were least painful... i would rock the s/t one and "anthem of the sun" over and over... also "live dead"... and yes, pigpen is a monster... i would end up in debates with the owner about the dead and i'd just keep saying "pigpen is the best thing about that band. it was his band." i don't feel that way so much anymore, but at the time, stuff like "turn on your love light" and "aligator" was the only dead stuff i could stand... i like the spirit of the dead, the fact that they were always experimenting with their gear (amp, guitars) and would do shit like play at the Pyraminds and had a tight community with their fans w/o tons of record sales. i really like all their first 6 or 7 records, but most of what they did, in the studio or live, from the mid 70's on, i can't stand... deadheads will play me shows from 77 that they say are the best ever and i just find them a little dull...

The Dead gave me one of the best musical weekends of my life! Show was at the horse track on the outskirts of Santa Fe. The town fiesta was the weekend and they had camping (and vending) next to the venue. Hot air balloon races at dawn over the desert. Sikh security guards in turbans. The announcements waiting to get into the show said "dogs will be allowed into the show, children will be allowed into the show, coolers will be allowed into the show, alcohol will be allowed into the show..." The only no-no was glass. Great shows too!
Following the Dead around (I saw my first show in '78) was great until "Touch of Grey" hit in 85/86 and the band couldn't play the amphitheatres any more. That and Garcia's heroin problem made the band sloppier and less consistent.

Thats Truth! My pop took me to my first show when I was 14....all down hill from there I guess. I remember smoking hash with him and his girlfriend in the show and then passing out on a car full people while I was suckin' balloons. A year later I ran into my High School Librarian at the Vegas show and partied a little with her..that was cool too...cause I was still in high school at the time. I was 16 when Jerry died so I caught the tale end, but most people my age didnt get the chance. My parents were always the "cool" ones according to everyone else, so I guess I have them to thank.
Hey at least I remember it! kind of...

Vintage Dead and Bears Choice are my Favs.

I really didn't listen to albums except "Terrapin Station", if it wasn't on a MAXELL 90 XLS, i wasn't haven't it, 2nd or 3rd generation a must. The listening of thier transitions into different songs has helped in mixing my music to this day.
