Oy, I have a feeling that this is gonna be one long-ass thread.

depends on the mentality of those that post within it.

I'm all for racial discussion on here as long as it doesn't dissolve into purified shit mess.

Blaz is coming from a perspective of living in eastern Europe and seeing some attrocities and understanding how life can be fucked up for a person. (correct me if I'm wrong)

EdPowers is coming from a perspective of being a black man in America and not liking it when white people explain how his life is (I know this is hypocritical of me to state, but correct me if I'm wrong.)

People on here tend to see the color of skin before the content of the words. This thread had a jokey opening line/ topic asking if Spike Lee was out of touch with the white people on soulstrut who think they can speak on black culture. This was not meant to segregate the conversation but rather include everyone.

EVERYONE HERE AS A RIGHT TO SPEAK FROM THEIR OWN PERSPECTIVE.

respsect that and this thread can actually be informative and slightly more interesting than a porn bloopers tape.

Hence the phenomenon of doods rocking herringbones, capezio shoes, and Tachini track suits, who use "moolie" as an everyday part of their vocabulary[/b]

Back in '69(I was 12) I was going to see Led Zeppelin at Madison Square Garden and we were going to make a day of it, hanging out in Manhattan all day and take in the concert that night.

As we were leaving my buddy's house his father, who was Italian, told us 'Be careful and watch out for the Moolies".

As we walked away I asked my friend what the hell a "moolie" was......he said "An eggplant"

For a minute or two all I could think of was that goofy song that was popular at the time "The Eggplant That Ate Chicago" and had visions of being chased by a large purple fruit down 42nd street.

Unfortunately I later learned what it really meant and heard it way too often in my mostly Italian neighborhood.

the vision of the large fruit plant chasing you crack me up but.........

......were they really so racist italian communities back then ?
    please elaborate more on this

p.s. = the name is "Tacchini" with double c

Well the word "Moolie" which is short for the Italian word moulinyan or eggplant was used primarily by people of Italian descent as a negative connatation towards black people. The word could be heard often in Italian neighborhoods and has been documented in books and films. Does that make any one Italian Community racist??

No more so than the Black Community that includes people who use(d) words like Guinea, Wop or Dago as negative terms towards Italians.

    IMO

I really don't understand why "blaz" is attacked by all other people why he is disagreeing with Edpowers......of course maybe the guy could use more sensitiviness and not using the word "ignore", but I don't see the point in this corporated racial politically correctness

of course I respect the fact he probably knows more & better than me but at certain level I still can be allowed of disagreeing with someone abt some issues......even if he is black at I still can debate with him on racial issues not having all other white people telling me "shut the fuck up because he is black so he knows what he is saying"

your whole attitude just enhance the racial barrier on the board

    just my 2 cents

Disagreeing with someone is one thing, but refusing to even engage them? To ignore a man who speaks his piece & proclaim yourself right. To not even say what you find wrong with their opinion. Is that a debate? That's just disrespect.

balz, you've made me real proud to have you set on 'ignore'...

venture out of your private mind garden someday, there's a whole wide world out there

but keep edpowers name out your effing mouth...

  • Black issues being pontificated by Whites on the board is a regular thing and it's laughable at best.

Black issues being pontificated by Whites on the board is a regular thing and it's laughable at best.

this isn't just a black/ white thing. People on here speak a whole lot for other people.

this particular type of ass speak is the only one that really gets talked on though.

The secret PM army knows the deal.

actually to me it's more like out-of-touch white people who are fighting to make sure there easy and digestible idea of blacks doesn't go harmed.

(BTW: that's directed at everybody on both sides of these lame-ass arguements.)

my man day knows exactly what i'm talking about.

well put, but like I said we shouldn't limit this to just white people speaking for black. There are white people speaking for many ethnic and racial groups not to mention for classes they have never been a part of.

"this is much bigger than hip-hop"

i'm putting you on ignore coz you keep entering arguments just to make a sideways remark at me and then dip out with nothing constructive to add.

and i'm also putting an ignore button on all materialism and bling-blingizms. i'm tired of hearing rappers being praised when all they talk about is how much money they spent on bullshit. (yeh you young jeezy, 60 gs on a belt buckle?)
don't be surprised when you see these dudes bankrupt 10 years from now and the only people that made any real money off their records are the labels that pimp them.

i have not seen "she hate me". "25th hour" was very good. "bamboozled" is one of his best films. i have high hopes for "inside man".

spike lee is still one of america's best contemporary directors.

now, i'll get some coffee and read this thread.

...with the white guys on here who feel they can speak on black culture?

In the most recent issue of Complex Spike sits down for an interview and speaks out on the image of hip hop. I couldn't find a direct transcription of the article, but this serves just as well:

    http://www.streethop.com/forum/article158817.html

"I love hip-hop,' Lee told Complex magazine. "But there are certain elements that are just [problematic]. You name your company Murder Incorporated, your logo's got bullet holes in it, you changed your name to Gotti, and you wonder why your ass is in court? I mean, come on. You want to be a gangster? Alright, well gangsters go to jail; gangsters get shot. I mean, look, 50 Cent has made a lot of money, but whatever you are doing that makes you have to put a bulletproof vest on your 5-year-old son, that's time for some deep introspective shit."

Spike didn't stop there. The outspoken director also bashed Cutis Jackson's motion picture debut, Get Rich or Die Trying, and his video game, commenting that they corrupt impressionable kids.

"That whole mantra-'Get Rich or Die Tryin'-for me that's criminal," Lee explained. "Because young brothers, they took that to heart: 'Whatever I got to do to get them rims, get my fly gear, to get my bitches and hoes, I'm going to do it. Fuck who I got to hurt, who I got to shoot, who I got to kill.' That's crazy to me. And his video game, Bulletproof? I'm sorry, I can't get with that."

there was also an interesting part of the article where he cited the example of a young man being gunned down in PA the weekend 50's movie came out.

    thoughts? comments?
Guzzo, why did you have to make that discussion about black and white ?
I haven't read the Complex interview, but in that quote no one talks about black and white but you.

Yeah! Keep those people broke! God forbid those people should ever aspire to some sort of financial equity with or--oh, the horror--financial superiority to--The Master Race.

While I agree with the sentiment, the drive for financial equity/equality tends to get sidelined when motherfuckers spend all their dough on shiny things, ya know? Hey, it's your money, do whatever the hell you want with it, but yeah, if you aren't smart about your shit, your life story will be told by "Cheesy Rat Blues."

    Were you mad at this?

I read a recent Rolling Stone interview with Chuck D where he talks about being on a panel with Dave Mays, formerly of The Source, who is white. Mays was wearing a platinum chain and diamonds and Chuck thought, "Wow, that's kinda redundant for a white dude, isn't it?"

And who's to say that dudes are spending all their money on jewelry, anyway? I think it's laughable for anyone to take any rapper's claim of prices as fact. Sorry, but I don't actually believe that Jeezy has a quarter-million around his neck.

At least not a quarter-million dollars.

  • What is up with white folks telling Black folks what they should and shouldn't spend their money on?

Is that shit any different from balding lawyer dude that goes out and buys a roadster because he's sad with his life and wants to pick up a broad half his age.

I mean, this thread is such a trainwreck (noshreckenberryhumboltcountytween).

Most definitely. They're pretty much all full of shit when it comes to statements about their wealth. Especially considering that most of what they show off as proof of wealth is rented, not owned.

And no, I wasn't mad at Paid in Full, and I'm not mad at flossy rappers now (though I find them a bit boring). Once you get your check, you can do whatever the fuck you want to do with it. It's your money, you earned it, enjoy it. But music-biz equity tends to be short-term, ya know? Like, how long do you think the average rapper can keep hitting up Pau Wau for fronts before his cash flow shrinks and he starts living beyond his means? How many "I used to have milions, now I've got nothing" stories need to be told before the lesson starts sinking in? If you play your cards right, a hit album can keep you living for a long time. Not living lavishly, necessarily, but living decently. That doesn't seem to be too much of a goal, though. That's all I'm saying.

No need to limit this discussion to rap music though- artists of EVERY genre have done the same thing... people have REALLY got it in for these rappers though...

yes, however I can understand where Spike is coming from in the sense that he is asking these people to use some responsibility in thier words and message. Be it black, white, or whatever a poor person should not think that wealth comes in the amount of jewlery around his neck or in his mouth. If anything its all just frivolous show. I wish things like investments or financial security were stressed more than iced out pinky rings and likewise for the braggadocious murder ink/ snowman mentality.

No person without financial security should be trying to express their personal weath through flashy bling, cars or otherwise and no person should try to glamorize selling coke/crack.
first cats talked about the CIA poisoning the inner city with it now folks brag about ppushing it on others, WTF?
