I have plenty of records that I couldn't "resell"
because of condition - that I listen to all the time.

In fact, I would say buying raer records at a fraction of their
usual cost due to condition issues is a signature style of mine.

at the end of the day, this guy/girl has stark and alot of us don't.

No, he/she does not. Tell 'em, Reynaldo.

And this "well, one record from a 2LP should be worth half of what an intact set goes for" is not how the record--or any other collectable--game works.

A record in that condition should be worth a small fraction of what a nice copy would be worth. That isn't even debateable. Whoever bought that was a fucking retard. Clean copies of this were going for under $400 during Stark Reality mania a couple of years ago. What happened?

If there were three separate but simultaneous auctions for a mint Stark Reality cover, disc one, and disc two, I would bid $200, $300, and $300 respectively.

Perhaps the guide??? could include sleeve/record price breakdowns for all items listed?

    That cover is a bio-hazard.

The actual disc in the auction in question graded "VG++ or better"--only the cover was "G'd up."

What happened is the same thing that happens when a porn site full of butt-ugly crackheads makes as much loot as one with hot girls does, or the same thing that happens when a crackhead who hasn't eaten in a week buys crack anyway.

  • has anybody asked Ahmad Jamal why his vanity label printed, like, 10 copies of this damn rakord? Or is it one of those warehouse fire situations where they almost all got destroyed before hitting the market back in the day?

im all for G- filler copies of superraers - if they are cheapo. but of course, ebay = fighting = overpaying

The comic book world used to go like this: mint =$100, then G = $40, Fine ("VG+") = $70. that was in 1975. about a 3 to 1 ratio. its since gone to about 15 to 1, as true high grade stuff has dried up so bad and vg and g stuff is easy to find. A $100 Mint comic in G would be about $7 now.

i know zip about Stark's value but i gather from this thread that its a $800 record, that divies to 200/300/300, asssuming each portion is NM. that cover is 'Fair' at best (half of Good value on a good day), so if it were a comic it would book at about $7.50 (1/30th of $200 mint value). the rackord is VG+ which for purposes of ebay i realize can go nealry as high as a NM. So gathering that its nearly a $200 piece of vinyl, the $7.50 cover should really just be a throw in.

Therefore, id like to say that whoever paid more than about $200 on that auction was ripping themselves off - but thats going by comic book technique. But ill stand by comic book technique - whupped copies of *anything* turn up more often than mint copies, and should, by the principle of relative scarcity alone, be worth way less than a mint copy.

(or...it could be that the market has now dictated that Stark, complete and NM is now a... $1000+ record???) what would a sealed copy go for? What would you pay if you had tons of cash and it didnt matter?

  • Apparently the going rate for a MINT copy is $711.12 - it's true.

    That's actually a VG++/VG+ (record(s)/cover) copy. I'd pay $500.

I can remember when The Stark Reality LP was selling anywhere between $250 - $300 and that was back in 1992. As stupid as it might sound now, I thought that price back then was retarted and passed on it. In 2000 someone caught a copy on ebay for $11 (think is name was soulcrates) and I said to myself I would never pay more than $100 for it. A year later I broke down and paid $220 for a copy. Every year since then I notice the LP jumps up in price about $200 a year. Same principle with the Skull Snaps, S.O.U.L., etc. I guess the lesson today is buy the record when its first discovered (or as soon as you find out about it) while there are some copies floating around and the price is below $200, because 4 years later when the masses all decide they each want a copy, you too might have to settle for paying $300+ for a record with bean dip, chicken grease, and snot on the cover...

...AND WE ALL KNOW WE GOTTA HAVE THOSE GRAILS!

Seriously, fuck a $200 VG- record. Unless it is from nigeria, is unheard of rare, and there is no way you could even obtain a dub of it. Which "vibes.." is, although a rare and amazing record, not. Plus it's been reissued.

    ?

Wow. ...its even the extra rare version that says "Jerk" on the label!

Do you have an open copy as well?

Where did you come across this artifact? I want to know more.

Sadly it is my only copy. Trust me when I say having a sealed copy is more a curse than a blessing. I pretty much CAN'T open it.
