anybody up on this?? seriously i have been checking lots of blaxploitation flicks for a minute now, i've seen plenty of good schitt. black gestapo was the holding the title in terms of jankiness, then ganja and hess replaced that. the bad bunch, is a good piece of shcitt. nothing can fade black devil doll. camcorder, worst editing, the sound of wind blowing distortion into the mic is usually 2-3x's louder than the dialouge and even is edited as background music sometimes...(next level)does anybody have a soundtrack lp/45/ep/anything on this flick?? the music is all drum machine (guitar red) and synth. thanks in advance,

    thanks in advance,

Ganja and Hess is actually quite a subtle piece of filmmaking....I wouldn't put that and "Black Gestapo" in the same room at all of sub-par cheapo exploitation. It may move a bit slow, but it's an indie horror/art film, not really blaxploitation or exploitative at all. "Black Gestapo" had great poster art and that's about it.

  • how closed are you to los angeles?

there is a ridiculous video store here called, mondo video a go go (melrose and heliotrope). it is the place that basically started the whole "heavy metal parking lot" craze when sophia copolla rented it from the shop.

of course, i have the video rented for today and bringing it back sometime tomorrow NIGHT. gettin my full 2 days worth out this one.

i think i will try to record the music out of my vcr using rca's into mbox. hope to get some decent results. the rest of my day will be dedicated to finding whats up with the ost though. it is so next level it is out of control!!

  • its all crap, at the end of the day.

directors will lie about even having anything to do with the movie, but a fanbase elects it as genius. was ganja made as an art film? i've seen it. i couldn't tell if the director was serious? or was he trying to crank out a low budget film and get onto the next level.

btw i'm comparing them technically, not artistically. (lights, sound, editing)

i've seen this, in one of my b-movie phases... it is indeed one of the biggest pieces of shit ever commited to film... i feel incredibly bad for the woman they convinced to be the main "actress"... "yeah, and you'll spend a good deal of the movie getting fucked by a Lester doll wearing a fucking rasta wig..." somehow, being in a bukkake porno may carry slightly more dignity... so, thus by the inverse B-movie rules, this is the best fucking movie ever... when they show the doll fucking this woman while calling her all manner of foul shit, you will bust a gut laughing... and all the street and bar scenes of 80's philly are really cool... the soundtrack is dope, a little Italian B-movie influence there... (and no way was any of it ever pressed officially...and if i ever saw a copy of this movie that was close to clean, i'd record it myself...)

Bill Gunn was definitely trying to create a serious piece of filmmaking, though the distributors had other ideas, recutting it and adding unrelated footage, and retitling it BLOOD COUPLE. Read more here:

BTW my high school friend David Kalat is the one responsible for getting the definitive GANJA AND HESS DVD released on his own imprint All Day Entertainment.

So, it's on DVD/VHS? I used to be in SoCal and remember Mondo Video, but I'm near the bay now.

ganja and hess is dope, i know i know. could use that soundtrack as well....

many films that attempted to make a shitty action flicks failed so miserably that their films actually became an art. i lump these in with the movies that set out to be art fims.

Black Sampson is actually not bad, looks like a studio actually put a little effort into it, technically. The main guy has a lion walking around the city with him, which is at least something novel, the rest of the film is pretty standard hero-runs-a-club-trying-to-get-over-on-the-mob style revenge flick teme if I remember right. With "Black Gestapo" being a 1 and "SuperFly" and "Truck Turner" being 10s, I would rate this flick a solid 6 on the Blaxploitation quality film scale.

It was released legit on VHS by Warners in the late 80s early 90s, shouldn't be an impossible find.

  • the only one i've seen is black samson.

very nice one. i think i rented something with a different name, and the box design made it look like it was from the 90s. then you turn on the movie and it's black samson. interesting action movie about a club owner who walks with a lion. typical take out whitey theme. best part of this movie is the sets w/lion.

really want to see sweet jesus preacher man. heard the soundtrack is great.

I remember reading in BadAzzMofo that Sweet Jesus Preacher Man sucked ass. Haven't seen it myself.

  • ed 'the man' from blaxploitation.com had done a mix with johnny trunk. played a sick tune off the soundtrack, sounded like coffy.

    never seen the soundtrack,

    need it.

oh yeah, what happened to that fanzine ?......it was put off line, but the guy was still active in producing documentary, comic bokk, etc

I wish he keep the reviews on his site

co sign on the sweet jesus soundtrack........a killer 45 produced by Johnny Pate was given legit release back then....

I saw Ganja & Hess, the restored version,
on the big screen at the Brattle Theater a couple of years ago,
as part of this amazing 2-month weekly series of films chosen for viewing by director Charles Burnett.

Unfortunately, in what was one of the most events in recent memory,
only 2 other people showed up for Ganja & Hess, and even worse,
when I drove out to see the 1964 film Nothing But a Man, I was
told they wouldn't be screening it because I was the only person who
    had shown up at all

I give props to the theater for running the series, and thumbs down
to my community that nobody cared...

Ganja & Hess was fantastic, a little slow at times, I guess,
but so full of interesting ideas and creative approaches that it
deserves a hell of a lot more respect than it gets.
