you ever read Jackie Chan's autobiography??????? Sammo Hung was like the cool ass know it all fuckhead bully boy at the hong kong dancing acting kicking child actor chinese theatre school they both went to... seriously fascinating stuff, the horrible discpline they went thru... stories of getting asskickings for eating a sugar roll... but, it is fascinating, that he and Sammo went to school together for years, read the book, he makes Sammo out to be the Don, coolest of the cool, smooth operator... and he was always kinda fat!

Yeah... I've read it... I've been a fan since the mid 80's of Sammo. I just can't believe how he still gets down after all these years.

there was a movie in the late 80s which was a true story based on the rites of passage of Sammo, Jackie and the Yuen brothers growing up in a Northern Chinese Opera theatre house in Hong Kong...

the mandarin name is "Qi Siao Fu" which depicts the 7 of them and their mantor, I don't know the english name of this film perhaps the kung fu heads knows what i'm talking about though.

well, actually all 7 of them were with the first name 'Yuen' when they were young:

Sammo was named: Yuen Long (which later Jackie took the 'Long' for his screen name)

    Jackie was named: Yuen Lao

together with the 5 Yuen brothers Yuen Biao, Yuen Kwai, Yuen Wah, Yuen Wu and Yuen Qiao.

Just watched Dragon Squad last night...not because of Sammo Hung, but out of sheer curiosity of how bad a movie produced by Steven Seagal produced can get.

And to me, it's badmeaningbad. It's extra painful to see John Connor's biological father stars in a crapfest like this.

If you dig Sammo's fight in Dragon Squad, go out and get SPL pronto. SPL shats on Dragon Squad big time. Rather than starring teeny boppers who try desperately to act like Dragon Squad, SPL has actual actors who knows their martial arts (Donnie Yen anyone?). Great actings with interesting characters, lean and mean dialogues with equally hardcore fight choreography. Definitely one of the best 2005 HKG cinema.

I watched SPL this morning. While, I agree SPL was a way better movie than D.S. I did kinda enjoy D.S. Not saying it's a top, top film. As I said... There is some major cheese as far as acting goes in D.S. But there were some good scenes in it. I guess I just liked the part where he picked up the cement brick with his feet and slammed it over dudes head.

    But SPL was dope...

I have to say my viewing of DS was completely biased. I watched SPL way before I got hold of the DS DVD...When I look at DS' poster, I was like, "oh please...all the teen-idol type stars with Steven Seagal as producer, should be a so-bad-it's-good movie". Look at the shootouts: like any half-decent professional actor, Michael Biehn showed in those shots he attended some firearm handling classes (though he just phoned in his performance like he's still coming off jet lag), while all the young actors who get top billing can't even steady a rifle, and they expect the audience believe them to be sharpshooters??? On the strength of their top-40 singles? (Anyways, that's the problem with most HKG stars vehicle: they think they can get away with non-acting as long as the star has a top 40 singles or some schitt).

Frankly I was surprised to see Sammo's in it 'cos you can hardly find his name anywhere on the poster. I think the movie gave those non-actors way too much screen time while good scenes like the Hung/Yam scene in the hospital after the shootout are way too short.

Pardon me for my rant plaese.

any recommendations on 2005, nothing has really blown me away this year. I did enjoy "AV" even if I had to put up w/ Shine.

last hk film I really really dug was "One Nite In Mongkok".

    Aser:

ya know, I actually didn't mind that "Election" film.

its about the triads yes, and its a bit played out and corny, but i DO like how they mixing in its cultural history into it, and how it portrays the conflict between loyalty and reality...

i'm bad with describing things but give it a shot anyay hopefully you'll see what i'm trying to say.

if ya haven't already watched it that is.

I caught AV a couple of weeks ago on boardband TV...I love the scene with Jim Chim Shui Man in it. He's killing it with his monologue ("You disappointed your people, you disappointed your uncle" has somewhat become a catchpharse of mine). Speaking of which, I should get out and track down the Jim Chim mix-DVD that some rabid fans compiled...

I found the ending of Election somewhat ehh...but every line delivered by Tam Ping-man is pure gold.

Francis Ng delivered a decent performance about a guy who lost his mind after the post-handover economic depression in Crazy N the City...perhaps the topic is a bit too close to Hong Kong, nonetheless, a fine "kitche-sink" drama type of steez from HKG.

  • Anyone see SPL? Watching that next. Or should I skip it?

Dude, Film is dope. Like that mid-90s HK style. Real fighters with history.
They are already working on a prequel

Yeah i agree. HK cinema is getting fucked by the pop star actor bullshit...

I saw Moonlight in Tokyo with Leon Lai yesterday & it was shit...
HK films screen here the same day they show over there. And there are never any decent reviews to gauge, so its always a gamble.

I'd have to say Election was the best HK film I saw last year. Looking forward to the almost completed sequel.

Dragon Tiger Gate is the next one to look forward to see.

Whatever happened to Yuen Biao? That guy was wiry, but he had some crazy moves!

I think the English title of that film was "Painted Faces." Either that or "Peking Opera Blues," I always get those movies confused.

Also, a word of advice: don't see "Heart of Dragon," it's awful!

This movie is titled "Painted Faces" in English. GREAT MOVIE! It is available on DVD with English subtitles. Everyone plaese to watch this one...

Yuen Biao makes mainland China-based TV serials these days. That's where the money is.

I saw Moonlight in Tokyo with Leon Lai yesterday & it was shit...
I skip every movie with Leon Lai in it on general principle, and Chapman To has done played himself out since Initial D...Anyways, is it like a carbon copy of Rainman?

Yeah i agree. HK cinema is getting fucked by the pop star actor bullshit...
"Initial D": HKG hiphop icon meets its Taiwanese counterpart: Edison Chan Vs Jay Chou. Yikes. Just yikes.

Also, a word of advice: don't see "Heart of Dragon," it's awful!
Jackie Chan once said he's box office poison whenever he try to make people cry. I guess that movie is a proof of that statement.

Anyone looking forward to the Jet Li-Ronny Yu Chinese New Year event movie "Fearless"? I watched the teaser in theatre a couple of weeks ago it was like a backyard wrestling video shot on cheap DVD with actors hamming it up for the camera...

Much worse. Because his 'mate' Chapman (all his character does is smoke) pimps Lai's arse & gets him to pretend that he's a Korean gigolo so he can earn money to pay back his debts.
    It's stupid, lame & ridiculous...
As dumb as Lau's Running on Karma.

But Leon Lai is in Seven Swords, which I'm not sure if I should wait for Hark's 5 hr version or just watch the 2 1/2 hr one...

LOL. in all fairness, any movie that
[color:white]features a decapitated Cecilia Cheung
is a good movie in my book.

Many critics here say 7 Swords is Tsui's back to forms. A martial arts epic that's not trying to ape LOTR (hello Chen Kaige, paging Zhang Yimou?) and the 2.5 is just as good.

Ha ha... That was just odd...
Thing is ROK wasn't even a comedy, yet it had Andy Lau in this get-up...

    Bypassed his Zu update... Wary...

Ha, give me Kaige over Yimou (though his films are enjoyable).

haha yup, that lecture by the pier was awesome. He plays the typical leg shaking, flem spitting, hk'er to the t. He was great as a spineless mid level banker in escape from hk island (which was ehhhh), always strong in his supporting roles.

the only watchable lai ming performances are fallen angels and comrades, almost a love story.

  • AserAser 2,351 Posts
also I never asked this before, but since there are a few native hk'ers in this thread....

how did you guys end up here anyway? HK is as far removed from "CRATE DIGGING DJ AND HIP HOP CULTURE!" as I can think of....

my family lives in hk btw..

That's right...people simply cannot take that movie seriously as a contemplatation on karma with that very get-up...

Their paths of these two directors from making movies about improvished village life to lush epics are interesting in their own right, but I gave props to Kaige simply because he shot the promo of my fave Duran Duran song (ghey I know), and didn't he direct that softporn, I meant psychosexual thriller with Rollergirl???

Even at his best, Lai still can't act I guess...the late Leslie Cheung dissed Lai's performance in "Comrades" in a talk show once...

The same story of looking for info about some obscure vinyl records...that's how I end up here...As for Hong Kong, it's not as far removed as one might think...or at least not what I think...what SS does is give me a good kick in the butt to go out and find those digging spots.

    Heard of DJ Tommy?

But really? Why would you think that? The internet is landless, so therefore perfect for this stuff.

I'd reckon The Congo or Yemen would be as far as you could get...

  • AserAser 2,351 Posts
right, believe me, I know HK is up on it. I'm just surprised to find native hk'ers that are interested in Placebo so to speak. Mostly because hk is driven by idol pop and not much else, plus vinyl has been a dead format since the mid 80's. Albeit my mom might have something to say about that because she is sick of my pops bringing home more and more records from sham shui po.

I should meet up w/ you dudes next time I'm back visiting family. I jones for some fish balls and pig skin something serious........

and yeah, I even know of DJ Tommy's dj school (HAH).

I watched both awhile back. Swords was just ok... Myth was kinda shitty IMO. I love me some Jackie films. But dude seems to be staying in the making "safe" movie zone. That's kewl for one or two flicks, once in awhile...

Aser-You can have the whole lot of them, fish ball, pig skin, records (and then some more) at ShamShuiPo next time you're in town, no doubt!

As for Myth...I deliberately boycotted the movie (personal beef with the director of that movie, but that's another story)...most people here just think it's another wack JC movie.I think he has not make a decent movie after Drunken Master 2.

While not his greatest movies, Rumble In The Bronx and Who Am I are entertaining enough.
