The problem seems to stem from the fact that they are in fact making a clay pot in the shape of the Lionel Ritchie bust, and not a bust. In the video, the blind girl who Lionel is unethically making a play for(presumably his blind student)seems to have crafted a bust out of solid clay, which usually is then used in the casting of a mold, into which is then poured bronze(or whatever molten material).

It seems that in trying to fabricate it as a hollow vessel that they ran into the most problems. That, and the fact that neither of them seems even remotely artistic. But I admire their determination. They actually made a very scary Lionel Richie head. props

They could make it hollow, they would just need to use a slab construction method instead of the rudementart "pinch pot" shit they are doing. And yeat a little bit of artistic talent would not hurt. I like that bust of the chick he has a crush on that dude makes in that Starburst commercial (I googled it to no avail).
