A conversation the other day between my younger brother and myself: Him: "Dude, check out this song..." plugs Ipod into stereo.Maneater by Hall & Oates begins to play.Me: "Hmmm." Him: (speaking as if to a child) "It's by this band called Hall & Oates." Me: "Um, yeah." Long pause while music plays.Him: "Have you ever heard of them?"Long story short, my bro needs an education in 80s music so I'm making him a mix CD. I'm trying to stick to the classics that I personally enjoy, but I'm open to strutter suggestions on anything that should be mandatory listening. So far I've downloaded:Joe Jackson - Stepping OutToto- AfricaThe Church - Under the Milky WayQuaterflash - Harden My Heart (hey, they're local ok?)Romantics - Talking in your SleepTears for Fears - Head Over HeelsAdam Ant - Goody Two ShoesName some more!

Most of the early Duran Duran still holds up (Hungry Like The Wolf, Rio, Girls On Film, Planet Earth), and there's the later stuff like The Reflex and Wild Boys.

colored vinyl (grey and purple), plaese

  • Adam and the Ants : Car Trouble > Adam Ant : Goody twoshoes

Infact the whole of the "Dirk wears white sox" LP is pretty good...

  • You said you're starting at ground zero, but if you get 12"/dub versions of 80's songs, you'll find some nice remixes of the hits. This is how I keep myself amused when doing cheesy parties. He may want to know the original versions first, but its nice to give him some different shit then what he'd find on his own.

Wham 'Everything She Wants' 12" Remix version
Duran Duran 'Girls on Film' (Night Version)
Human League 'Keep Feeling Fascination' (Dub)
Human League 'Don't You Want Me' (Instrumental)
    Prince 'Raspberry Beret' 12" extended
Dead or Alive 'You spin me Round' 12"
New Order 'Blue Monday' dub version...kills
    Yaz 'Situation' Dub...or OG.

I haven't heard that spinbad mix but from what I've heard about it (and other mixes he's done with JS-1, etc) I'm sure its retarded.

If you think he's ready for something a bit grittier/no wavey try

    Gang of 4 'Entertainment' LP
    Grauzone 'Eisbar'
    Laidback 'White Horse'
    A Certain Ration 'Shack Up'
    Disco Not Disco comps.
ESG, Liquid Liquid, Konk, various 99 records shit.
23 Skidoo 'Coup' (later ripped off by the chemical brothers)

    bonus wedding cheeze:

Dexy's Midnight Runners 'Come on Eileen'
Pretenders 'Middle of the Road' (gets the yuppies moving!)
    Taco 'Puttin' on the Ritz'
Talking Heads 'Naive Melody' (actually this is a jam)

    $??

Yeah, Goody Two Shoes is not my favorite Adam Ant track by far, but I think it's something my brother will like.

I couldn't get everything I wanted, but I got enough for a short mix. Here's the final track listing:

    2. Adam Ant - Goody Two Shoes

    3. Talk Talk - Life's What You Make It

    4. Toto - Africa

    8. A Flock of Seagulls - I Ran

    9. Billy Joel - Movin' Out (Yeah, technically not 80s, but he needs to hear it.)

    10. The Romantics - Talking in Your Sleep

    11. Yes - Owner of a Lonely Heart

    12. Roxy Music - More Than This

    13. Tears For Fears - Pale Shelter

    14. Hall and Oates - Out of Touch (Have you heard of these guys?)

    15. Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill (Thanks for reminding me of that track, Schnipper)

    16. Men At Work - Down Under

    17. Laura Branigan - Self Control

    18. The Church - Under the Milky Way[/b]

    I'll post audio later.

    Here's the mix:

Real Audio Clip (256k, so decent sound)

I did it really quick, so it's nothing fancy. I also haven't adjusted all the levels, so some songs are quieter than they should be. Still, I thought it'd be fun to share.

    Enjoy!

What the heck is an 80ties mix? How can ten years of music be represented in one mix? You can maybe be kinda sucessful when you try and make a 50ties or 60ties mix but pop music was way to diverse in the 80ties. I started buying records in 1980 seriously so I know what I am talking about. From my point of view the 80ties were one of the most interesting and exciting decades in music. I started as a teenage prog rock/ hippiie music fan, disbanded that whole sound through Punk and New Wave, started diggin soul and garage punk before hip-hop changed it all.

Many of my all-time favourite bands from The spacials to BDP are from the 80ties and I still can't stand all the 80ties crap that i used to hate religiously back than: Joe Jackson, The Smiths, Toto, UB40, Kate Bush, INX, Eurythmics, Phil Collins ...and the list goes on.

Sorry for hijacking, Twolpy, your mix mirrors some of the best and worst music from that period, even though I can't cope with the headline.

Smallchange and Risingson represent my 80ties best!!

I believe he just wants a simple compilation. He's not trying to write the history of the world on the head of a pin.

As if 50's and 60's music wasn't? Hell, the sixties alone gave us garage, psychedelia, frat rock, Latin boogaloo, the Bakersfield country sound, the blues (both soul-blues and the white revival kind), what was left of the Rat Pack (Frank, Sammy & Dean, still having hits even though their era was gone), bubblegum, folk-rock, Phil Spector, Stax-Volt, Motown, soul-jazz (Ramsey Lewis, Jimmy Smith, etc.), the folk music boom, etc., etc., and etc..

I kinda agree w/ u but you have to start some where. You could make separate mixes for all the various genres. It's just an introduction not a clear history of music. All you can hope for is his little brother doing the extra leg work to delve deeper into the artists he finds attractive.

No worries. Like I said in my initial post, I'm just looking for tracks I think my brother would like, not an all-inclusive mix. You're right about the vast diversity of the 80s, however I think you might be unaware of the U.S. custom of labeling pop music from the 80s (like the music people are listing here) as just "80s" music. My town has two or three "80s nights" where they play only this kind of music. It's not to say that pop is the only kind of music that came from that decade, but rather an easy title for club promoters and radio programmers.
