A conversation the other day between my younger brother and myself: Him: "Dude, check out this song..." plugs Ipod into stereo.Maneater by Hall & Oates begins to play.Me: "Hmmm." Him: (speaking as if to a child) "It's by this band called Hall & Oates." Me: "Um, yeah." Long pause while music plays.Him: "Have you ever heard of them?"Long story short, my bro needs an education in 80s music so I'm making him a mix CD. I'm trying to stick to the classics that I personally enjoy, but I'm open to strutter suggestions on anything that should be mandatory listening. Many of my all-time favourite bands from The spacials to BDP are from the 80ties and I still can't stand all the 80ties crap that i used to hate religiously back than: Joe Jackson, The Smiths, Toto, UB40, Kate Bush, INX, Eurythmics, Phil Collins ...and the list goes on.
Sorry for hijacking, Twolpy, your mix mirrors some of the best and worst music from that period, even though I can't cope with the headline.

I believe he just wants a simple compilation. He's not trying to write the history of the world on the head of a pin.
As if 50's and 60's music wasn't? Hell, the sixties alone gave us garage, psychedelia, frat rock, Latin boogaloo, the Bakersfield country sound, the blues (both soul-blues and the white revival kind), what was left of the Rat Pack (Frank, Sammy & Dean, still having hits even though their era was gone), bubblegum, folk-rock, Phil Spector, Stax-Volt, Motown, soul-jazz (Ramsey Lewis, Jimmy Smith, etc.), the folk music boom, etc., etc., and etc..
I kinda agree w/ u but you have to start some where. You could make separate mixes for all the various genres. It's just an introduction not a clear history of music.All you can hope for is his little brother doing the extra leg work to delve deeper into the artists he finds attractive.
No worries. Like I said in my initial post, I'm just looking for tracks I think my brother would like, not an all-inclusive mix. You're right about the vast diversity of the 80s, however I think you might be unaware of the U.S. custom of labeling pop music from the 80s (like the music people are listing here) as just "80s" music. My town has two or three "80s nights" where they play only this kind of music. It's not to say that pop is the only kind of music that came from that decade, but rather an easy title for club promoters and radio programmers.
