I think this movie is overhyped... Peter Jackson gone wild.
The dinosaur scenes are in general way too unrealistic... especially the stampede scenes. There are also some giant insect scenes that are over the top... some cheezy scenes with kong "ice skating" and so on.
I really think this movie suffers from lack of editing - I think Peter Jackson was left unchecked...
this would have made a good 2 hour movie. I wasn't totally disappointed with it.
It sounds way too different than the original. Its one thing to redo a movie and enhance/reinterpret certain parts, its another thing to add DINOSAURS and giant insects. The original jawn was somewhat plausible - there could be a really big gorilla, it could be captured and brought over, and do some crazy shenanigans. But dinosaurs and giant insects sounds kind of retarded to me.

ummmm...dude...there are dinosaurs in the OG...
??? serious? Its been a few years, but thats definitely not how I remembered it
The movie does stick to many parts of the original. That being said the movie is OK, not great.
Someone in the other movie thread said they didn't like the build up at the beginning, but I thought it created tension until they threw in a little love scene that was uncessary in my book.
All the stuff on the island was entertaining. When they got back to NYC it went downhill however. To many scenes of the girl staring up at Kong and getting teary eyed.
Would recommend it as a matinee, and not pay full price, or just wait until it comes out on DVD.

Which OG are you talking about? They weren't in the 70's version but were def. a part of the 1930s original.
dinosaurs and insects still sounds retarded to me though. OG or not.
Dudes just go see it. Worth the $8.50.
Jackson makes it work. Yeah he uses some leftover "rings" wall & ogre models, but it doesn't hurt.
Trust me, you will be into king kong battling 3 t-rexes while falling over a cliff into vines and saving namomi watts. It's more than just eye candy. Something for the kids, something for the big boys & girls.

Giant insects too, edited out from the original shoot.
I haven't seen this new one, but I highly recommend the newly restored DVD of the OG, complete with a great doc about Miriam C Cooper, who scripted and directed the original Kong. The OG Kong was practically a autobiography of Cooper(who went to exotic locales like Skull Island), who was a real life adventurer, al la Indiana Jones, and filmmaker. The stuff he did in the real world was as unbelievable as the story of Kong seems.

Coming soon to a theater near you courtesy of Martin Scorcese.

You should avoid the whole movie then shouldn't you? After all it's about a big giant gorilla living on an island. It would seem that giant insects and dinosaurs and the like would be part and parcel of such a movie.

Harryhausen was indeed a genius, but don't leave out the guy who ran the show on Kong, Willis O'Brien. The man who conceptualized and built the Kong models. Special Effects pioneer.
What's up w/ the storyline? Is it all about visuals?
Doesn't everyone know the story already?
YES, but did he add/subtract shit?
There were some subtle changes in the story I guess. The Jack Black character is more of a greaseball in this one. The Naomi Watts character is much more into Kong, etc. Jackson basically brought it up to date. There's a funny scene where Kong is grabbing random blonde women off the street then tossing them aside once he realized that they're not his dear Ann.

I suck at movie reviews.

When I ordered lunch at Burger King the other day, I asked if that "Kong Burger" was as big as in the commercial. It isn't.
Kong's on Viagra.

I left my hater hat at home and enjoyed this movie a lot.
Best integration of special effects I've seen maybe ever.
