Which version of "Hard Times" you takin'?

VS

I knew the Baby Huey version way before I knew Curtis recorded it too (yeah, I know it's his song, foll). I gotta admit, I was surprised at how nice the Curtis version was when I finally heard it, even though it's a lot smoother and more laid back. But I gotta ride with the Baby Huey, mane.

Cold cold eyes, upon me they stare
people all around me, and they're all in fear
they don't seem to want me, but they won't admit
I must be some kind of creature up here havin' fits
From my body house, I'm afraid to come outside
although I'm filled with love, I'm afraid they'll hurt my pride
so I play the part I feel they want of me
and I pull the shades so I won't see them seein' me
Havin' hard times
in this crazy town
havin' hard times
there's no love to be found

Whichever one you pick, it's all just paying homage to the greatness of Curtis in the long run.

"My main bitches call me lazy / educated birds say 'Ghost, you so crazy' (crazy crazy)... there's no looove to me found"

    I'll take the Gene Chandler version - "In My Body's House"

  • 'Tis is holding it down i think. I'm pretty sure him singing the words, "I really gotta pinch a loaf..." would make me wanna get all screw face and punch the roof of my car to the music..

    He is my dude...

    the Baby Huey version.

    complete funk and hip-hop classic. that rhythm and those horns are FIYAH

    BTW that Curtis LP is my favorite album in dudes catalogue

  • I gotta say the Curtis version is one of my absolute all time joints. As a club record, the Baby Huey definately holds its own much better. And as a sampled joint and etc etc etc. But for pure listenability, I'm Curtis all the way. I love the later slept on Curtis Records (No Place Like America, Sweet Exorcist).

    Curtis gets it on theoutstanding vocal performance with the subdued backing beat
    Huey gets it on the funky in your face beat with the less than memorable vocal performance.

  • I know the Baby Huey version has a super dope string section that Gene Chandler's lacks, but Gene's version is a little more uptempo.

    deejaying = baby.

    listening = curtis

    To me that's the problem. I heard Huey's version first, so next to that, Chandler sounds rushed.
