  • sometimes she drives me crazy, but i love this record.

Odetta is cool, for a folk artist. But...a SOUL singer???

When I was in high school, the administration brought Odetta in to perform at a special assembly. Shit was not pretty-- she more or less got chased off stage. It wasn't the booing so much as when people started throwing things. I think she got hit with a tennis ball.

As far as LPs go, I'm kinda partial to these in addition to the above:

    Honey & the Bees: Love
    Shirley Brown: Woman to Woman
The Vicki Anderson, Lyn Collins and Marva Whitney boots from the early 90s
    Millie Jackson: Caught Up
    Donna Summer: On the Radio
    Gwen McCrae: Rockin' Chair

  • Honey & the Bees: Love

    please to send westward...

Well, almost all of it is available on Josie 45s, which tend to be pretty cheap and available. Problem is, the best cut, "Do You Understand," is LP-only.

Those women are pretty. Bet the music is on par.

  • The track "I'm Blue" on here has the same music as Gran Am's "Get High."

But this is "Soul Jazz". You would need another thread to appreciate this.

For real though, it's amazing and if you don't have this you're simply not just a great collectro.

this whole thread just gave me like 20 new "must haves" to pick up

  • In all fairness....I don't think this Merry Clayton is all that exciting:)
As I remember it; it has one or two decent tracks. "Suthern Man" and maybe one other. Far from one of the best female soul LP's I've ever heard.

  • MASSIVE cosign on the Lovelites LP. It really might be the best soul record I own.

    Cosign Alice Clark. Great record.

Cosign Ruby Andrews, anyone know if her moder LP is any good? "Everybody Saw You" has been on constant rotation. GIVE ME COVER

Cosign cosign cosign I guess I have not much to add!

are you talking about the one from '77 on ABC?

its nowhere near as good as her zodiac releases but worhtwhile to have. There is an amazing cover of that Sam Cooke "A Change is Gonna come" joint that is ruined in the last 30 seconds with some out of the blue disco flair.

Well, in all fairness...I like it. My top ten has probably already been mentioned. I would put it in my top 20 though.

I'm really into this record + that picture of Bettye makes the kid wish he was about thirty years older.
