Sorry to the be new cat and ask dumb questions. However, i'm looking for some really quality and choice rhodes piano samples, any suggestions? My crates are far from deep, and the selection of recyclable vinyl in these parts is slim to none. However, any help would be appreciated. Thanks Much.

There is a dope Liberace record where he plays the Rhodes and there are also a lot of breaks. It's the one that's got that one joint with just the drums without the bells. You should get that one!

If you are really new and in Iowa, maybe we should help you out. Start with the basics.

    Seriously,

    Ahmad Jamal - Jamalca & 73 LPS

Ramsey Lewis Trio - Unpendo Ni Pamoja LP

ALL 70s and early 80s Lonnie Liston Smith LPs

Clare Fisher - Latin Patterns LP is pretty dope

I am sure that if other folls are in a good mood you will get a nice list going in this thread. You will also continue to get a lot of jokes as well. You should really introduce yourself mane.

Don't let them get to you. It's just the welcoming party. To be honest though, you have a few choices here.

    1. you can look for the samples from records
    2. you can buy a sample library of rhodes sounds
    3. you can get a keyboard with a Rhodes patch
    4. I know my hommie Bam may have a CD of hits off the Rhodes (recorded from the actual keyboard)
    5. you can hire a keyboardist to lay it down with his rhodes
    6. you can buy one of them used, always under $1000 and sometimes as low as $400

    take your pick

    Couple questions

Does shit go wrong with them a lot? Are they hard to fix? And where are good places to look for them used?

I've never owned one but here are the issues I've heard about..

    a. they weigh a ton
    b. they need tuning occasionally
    c. replacement parts maybe expensive

    Day...any thoughts on this?

As to where to find it...

    ebay
    craigslist
    classified ads
    sweetwater music for sale section

    etc

local classified ads are the way to go because shipping is usally a pain in the ass and wallet. It's surprising what can be found in the classifieds.
In Austin someone was selling a mint B3 with leslie for $250 about 6 years ago.

Yeah, this topic came up the other night with a guy who's pops was a music teacher. I'm trying to get him to repair mine because it's hard as hell to find people who know how.

They are indeed heavy as hell, repairing them can be tricky and tuning them is damn near impossible if you don't know what you're doing. When I bought mine the middle E was dead and there were/are a few things that need fixing, but I haven't had anything else go wrong with it.

Replacement parts aren't all that expensive and are easily found on ebay. But soldering and replacing things like pick ups is where shit gets tricky.

There's gonna be potential problems with any instrument you get so don't let that stop you if you can find one for cheap.

  • Id reccomend a wurlitzer 200A.

The sound is comparable to a Rhodes, maybe a little less dreamy/soft/spacy, but its a fraction of the weight (it really is portable), the action is a million times better then the mushy rhodes keys, and its got built in speakers for when your to lazy to deal with an amp.

Dont buy one that is out of tune though. Unlike a rhodes which has a fairly simple tuning process, it actually involves welding on more metal to the lead tip of the reed(which lowers the pitch) or scraping metal off of the reed (raises pitch). EEEHH.
