Hey Gang - Glad I checked in before the vault locked up. Most of what I'd say has been said already but I definitely want to say Thank You to Raj for building and maintaining an online community that blossomed into so many beautiful real world friendships and experiences. xox - Ms.Bassie
I'll chime in as well - had to make a new account as I don't remember my password from 21 years ago, and it looks like I'm about 15 years too late to reset my password with a collegeclub.com email address, haha.
Like most everyone else I haven't posted here in a long time, but really enjoyed the heyday of Soulstrut. At the time, I was an immature barely-adult with small children, a C- GPA to manage, and occasional $6 an hour part time jobs. I had no time but to take care of kids, go to class, and work. I remember it being an immensely stressful period and even though i was unnecessarily obnoxious half of the time, I enjoyed talking with you all. In retrospect I regret not having the time or money at the time to have connected in person like a lot of you did, but the online community was fun anyway.
A little while back I sold my house and in that process almost all the records I had. They been collecting dust, untouched, for years. Part of a different past chapter of my life, I guess.
Soulstrut is like returning to your hometown years later - you're sad it's not the way that you remember it, but still nice to know it's there if you want to return someday. But you know in the back of your mind that you and the people you knew have moved on and aren't coming back.
As part of trying to figure out my login here I found an old Photobucket account I used for Strut related pics and whatnot. Kind of a weird time capsule - everything from early stage memes to injokes to MySpace screenshots (I have no idea why).
Does anyone still have any of the Leo Sayer Beat-Off archives? Unfortunately a lot of stuff I posted up I used my own website/domain to do it and all that is gone. I remember how many people's beats they made were actually pretty good given the source material.
Would love to catch up with anyone from those days - feel free to drop me a line at rollingacres@gmail.com.
Nagging questions: - Where is TheMack these days? - How will Pap Day be celebrated going forward? - Is Guzzo still in West Covina? Will he be making any more dating show appearances? - Is Reynaldo still down on the hippie commune? - RIP Brian Peppers - Does Faux_rillz still have this shirt?

Welcome back. It's pretty slow over here for the most part but feel the same way. I've been checking in on SS for so long that I just keep coming back even when it's slow. A lot of us had kids and life got in the way of being a DJ and posting on the forums. Music has always been a constant though and keeps bringing us back together.

I check in every year or two but since I couldn't remember my login it was just for lurking.
I wonder if @RAJ has considered doing a board backup to the Wayback Machine/Internet Archive? Although a lot of the messages are just bs (which I've been enjoying rolling back through - there are a couple of stories I personally shared that I had completely forgotten about since) there's a lot of music/vinyl/DJ/etc info that might be worth saving somewhere. I did notice that if you have a (free) Wayback Machine account you can have it crawl all the outlinks of a page or post, so you don't end up with just one page of a multipage thread, for example.
Think I might take some of the old emojis and make a Whatsapp sticker pack or something. Nobody will get the context but they're still funny with or without it.
I apparently had the same revelation I'm having now, but 10 years ago:
World is going to lose a special place and a wonderful source of music-nerd related knowledge. I always used to and still do check the Strut's search whenever in need for information or suggestions of artists or genres.
went looking for something i wrote years ago on soulstrut and found this to still be active (with the short life span left). listened to a mix. read some old comments. still enjoyable. from the soulstrut emails to the website, this was a home for a lot of us for a long time. thanks rick for doing this and keeping this around.

Bassie! What's good? Still riding for Abel? You still playing out here and there in Toronto? We left the city 5 years ago and I feel so
Couldn't log in under my old account... Raj take a bow sir! This site had such a positive influence on me and helped me develop an ear and appreciation for so much under the radar music. There were amazing discussions with a lot of nuance. The humor was on point as well and loved the culture, inside jokes and graemlins (this thread should be a Five Pager). So many amazing recommendations that I still bump to this day and the second I hear a tune I discovered here years/decade plus ago, it automatically registers in my head as a "Soulstrut Song". The numerous DJ mixes were fire!
As I get older I realize that life is simply energy and this platform was a great exchange of energy. Much respect to the old schoolers and new. Then energy absorbed will be channeled forward, thanks for the medium Raj, nuff respect!
Wish there was a way text of the site could be archived or downloaded like how people save Wikipedia! So much knowledge dropped. I even still have a pair of shoes to this day that I got from the sneakers thread! All the best Strutters!
I've been skimming here and the some of the old posts... interesting time capsule. And who knew the Strut predicted the mortgage crisis?

the housing market is insane right now out here if you are buying. However keep in mind that it is california real estate. Unless something drastic happens its not going to come down at all. It amy slow dow its price growth rate a bit though...
tell that to all the folks who ended up upside down in the early 1990s. dont bet on it requiring anything drastic for house prices to fall here. lots of dumbasses in interest only and 3-5 year arm loans that are going to be screwed when their loans reclaibrate. if appreciation slows and wage growth rates stay constant, there will be lots of forclosures and the flood in supply will drop prices."
Hey there soulstrut, It is very possible that I am the youngest here, I found this just a week ago and it fits me too well! I'm only 16 but I have such an old soul for the past, I love looking through my families records, (I have a small collection of my own too) and I may not understand what even 1/100ths of any of this, but I wish I could have been here longer, it seems like a great community. I'll be here for when it ends, even if I was -9 when it was founded, I'll go down with it as if I was always there!

Download as many of the mixes as you can. And the graemlins.

Raj, I think you should think of this as a pause ::graemilin as opposed to a finite end. I really get a vibe that new fans of the music the Stut celebrates will appear in the future as people crave real soul the more they get sick of AI or mainstream/indie etc. I think it's just exposure... as recently I've been to concerts n Toronto with Marcos Valle and Cortex and I was amazed at the crowd expectedly old heads but then tons of fans half our age. Just like how sometimes you look up a classic on YouTube and read the comments and it's like "thanks GTA for putting this song on the soundtrack" comments. This site is a great gateway drug to wonderful music.
I'm rambling but suggesting even if the Strut needs to sleep and then reinvent itself in the future, so be it. I enjoy Wax Poetics and they reinvented themselves, but the Strut's culture just really enhanced the music for me if that makes sense. There's serious history and energy in that music, the nuances discussion and humor... It was fantastic, and this poast is a toast.

There were lots of old dudes at both concerts! It was nice. I find it reassuring to not be the oldest guy in the room.
It's also really good to see Toronto getting interesting concerts again. Are you going to Mildlife on Saturday? Then there's Kokoroko and Allysha Joy the following week.
Sup Toronto Heads! Thanks for the recs, busy at the moment, but another concert to check out Ebo Taylor x Pat Thomas at Phoenix Concert Oct 31. Really wish I could go as I like that venue and it's time isn't long. Peace!

I was supposed to see them last Wednesday in Los Angeles, but it was postponed until early next year as was the Gyedu-Blay Ambolley show. From what I heard, it was due to visa issues, unfortunately.

Looks like that's been moved to next April
I am getting my Phoenix fix in tomorrow tho at Group Home/Cormega/KnowledgeThePirate...
