The Saul Bass connection checks out since the first and only feature film he directed ('Phase IV', a trippy movie about hyper intelligent ants) included Stomu Yamashita's music, but for a scene which was unfortunately cut in the original release.

Between this, the "Sea & Sky" cover art above (which was used for a 1980 short film he directed called 'The Solar Film') and the poster he made for an earlier (1968) experimental short film he also directed called 'Why Man Creates', I can tell he was into the setting sun motif.

As for the record I found this weekend, it almost completes my collection of pre-Go Yamashita, some of which were used for 'The Man Who Fell To Earth' (percussive/ambient) and a Formula 1 doc called 'One By One' (more on the jazz-rock side)

Swap meet finds. Fredera is the only LP from the Som Imaginário guitarist who played with the best of the best in MPB. Astrud is in unplayed condition. Egberto Gismonti is the LP he released after the excellent "Corações Futuristas" but before he signed with ECM, starting with "Dança Das Cabeças". Rare Bird is their debut. I owned a Uriah Heep record before. This is their second one.

Hopefully this won't be the last finds post I'll make here as I'll make an effort to do some record shopping while in Salvador, Bahia in two weeks, which coincides with SS going offline soon after.

I had no idea that the Uriah Heep title track was used for the background story roll in "Water Margin", the film

A majority of these are Christmas gifts. The first three Brazilian records are reissues, of course. I'm fortunate to have friends who are on my same wavelength. "Alan Parsons Project" is their "debut" (/Dr. Evil). Hummingbird is Bernard Purdie with Jeff Beck's crew. Rare Bird has one of the best Morricone versions I have heard. I saw Andrea Centazzo play with his trio at a local universalist church last week. It was real solid of him to sell me his last copy and to throw in some of his "best of" sampler CDs from his Ictus label. He even signed an bio insert on an Italian jazz comp I found in the dollar bin a few years back. Also pictured is Bayete's auto, who I also met recently.

That Bayete LP is great.   Got a copy 15 years ago for $35...not signed, though!

Some Salvador finds. Debut from Ednardo. I thought his name was familiar and I just remembered that I have his and the Pessoal Do Ceará's follow up ("Meu Corpo..."). Never can go wrong with Egberto or Gal. I thought finding the Giorgio here of all places was surprising.

I have been thinking about that for a long time. My mentality is, "it's on YouTube. They can check it out if they want." Thing is, I don't have recording software, a second turntable or a fully functioning mixer to make something proper. I never felt a need to buy or upgrade either because, primarily, no one ever has asked me to be the DJ for anything. Also, I am very frugal. But once the chance arises, it's on!

Nice Aussie replacement, my old copy had writing on the label, this one is nice and clean... Classic Mod Psych track, came out on double Shot in the US.

Nice Brasillian Joe anderson, originally on buddah in the States, pressed / released in 75. This is a nice 45, that play, as most if not all do, at 33rpm... I think the sound is far superior...

I hear that. I mean, if you have a vision of how to put together a selection, it may be worth putting some effort into a mix, even just for your own enjoyment.  But I would even go for a ytube playlist of songs you like!

Aussie Jazz/Funk group from Sydney, well they recorded in Sydney at the EMI studios (Studio 3) They were quite big in their day 'Stylus' they were on TV allot, and had a fair few Lp's, I think this is the best track they put out, but depends on your taste...

Some recent local finds (25c-$2). Was taking a closeup and Mitzy came through to let me know she chooses Pentangle, so I'll just share this version.

I'm well into the Mancini at -2ish.  I love the cover of the Valdy given the title: Family Gathering.  It's actually a nice local folk outing - not depressing.   The Howard Roberts is a fav, and the Two Man Sound has one of the greatest bass drops of all time (s/o Dimitri From Paris)

Howard Roberts: I really enjoy the two ABC/Impulse! LPs that bookend that one ("Antelope Freeway" and "Equinox Express Elevator").

  • Man that Two Man Sound sounds like a Dimitri From Paris production if he'd been around in 1975. His album was one of a small handful of sort of sample-based-breakbeat-exotica-lounge albums that I think might still stand up (Ursula 1000 had one, I think...).

And had to youtube Ednardo as suggested... lush album.

Electrode (and Mal C and anybody), it's in the DNA of Soulstrut to make a mix and have Raj host them. If he's keeping it alive it's the least we can do... think on this

Water Margin was hard AF.  Sunday evenings on BBC 2.  We were too young to get the politics of the storyline but Mr. Watermargin kicked ass every week.

did I hook you up with that Ednardo e O Pessoal do Ceará LP? That and Pavão Mysterioso are both heavily slept on, I always pick them up if I find them cheap and try to foist them onto people. That Egberto is one of his few LPs with some pretty hard grooves IIRC, his other stuff can get noodly. The stuff he produced for his own label, Carmo, is mostly on the good side of weird and experimental.

I bought the 80s pressing of "Meu Corpo", the one with their faces on the cover, a little before the pandemic. I didn't know much about Brazilian music aside from the famous names then. I think you were the one who told me to get it during one of the record shop stops. Thanks for looking out!

  • Don’t think I have ever posted in a Soulstrut finds thread but had a photo from my latest flea market and one record store haul.

  • Rustledust, where are you located that you ended up with a Looptroop 12" from a thrift store?? (Or was that the record store buy)

  • I'm in Finland so next to Looptroop's home in Sweden. It was from a local record store though, top left bits were from the recycling centre.

  • Not bad for thrift finds!

I found this in a clearance bin over the weekend. It is listed as "hard rock" on Discogs. It goes all over the place. I feel like the band didn't know which direction they wanted to focus on and recorded a bunch of different styles and each track sounds completely different than the last. The title track is great though.
