I was just saying to a friend that I like how kids these days are getting into jazz by way of amen breaks and Nintendo soundtracks

yeah, I saw a clip of that performance. I like how Ariana Grande's eyes seem to glaze over once Thundercat and Domi go off, as if she just wants to hop back on the spaceship and return to planet Earth

Not sure whether everybody here follow Questlove on Instagram as he reposted these, but I am pretty sure few people follow Kool & the Gang.... because, what could they possibly have to show that’s of interest these days...? Right?

Well, turns out they decided to go back in time and show their story in a superb series of interviews combined with animations:

    To be continued....

  • Those are great! I really like animation as a "reconstruction" in historical documentaries where you'd otherwise just have a few photos or whatever. It's expensive but it's so much more watchable.

Just watched this.  I couldn't name you one AG tune but I stopped looking at everyone else. I think that's bad on my behalf.

Am I late to the party to mention Tales Of The Tourbus?
I only discovered this today and the episodes I watched so far are Clinton related:

I wonder whether this guy has ever been active on Soulstrut. Having seen his postcards, I'd like to see his records.

Lovely piece.  Shame they are all filed in boxes, I'd have made some art out of them, like a whole-wall collage.

  • I love seeing a theremin player really vibing full body. It's such a nerdy instrument to begin with and that's just the icing. Here's some random youtube brothers, shawn lee, and georgia anne muldrow in 2013.

Me and wifey had a good laugh at the hairstyles and fashion and estimate this as 1982.  We are old enough to remember it (the year, not the tune).

    Sounds about right.

I am surprised that it's so difficult to find information about this. Over the years the video has repeatedly been posted on Youtube by various channels, but nobody provided any details about its origins with their post. A few comments under the videos help to establish: The clip seems to have been recorded in Chicago's Copherbox nightclub; the MC appears to be a part time DJ, otherwise bus driver for Chicago's CTA, called Charlie Green who was active in the 60s and 70s, but judging by the video also still in the 80s. Apparently, he has a son by the name of DJ J Grilla who is still a DJ in the area. https://soundcloud.com/dj-j-grilla

According to comments under various videos, Charlie must have been a minor celebrity and his Bus Stop routine must have been quite popular in Chi-Town and even a bit beyond, though people in NY etc. did not neccessarily neccessarily realise that the dance they were doing had come from him / from Chicago.

In 1986 a Chicago producer called Hudson Beauduy released a House version incorporatig a recording of Green's routine calling it Bus Stop / Electric Slide.

Ten years later, Hudson was responsible for one of the versions of the Cha Cha Slide which ruled children's birthday parties in the early naughties (and since...)

In 2017 a French DJ/Producer by the name of "Will The Funkboss" did a post-disco remake in with the audio from the video crudely incorporated.

    Yes, obviously.

One of the reason I would like to date the recording I had originally posted is that I think the DJ is not just playing the record but is using doubles.

@djgrilla on Instagram is Charlie Green's son. He says it's between 81 and 83 at The Copperbox in Chicago.
@themorrisday posted this clip a couple of weeks back.

Coincidentally, shortly before you posted that, I just learned where the house in the Thriller video is located; not too far from where I live. I will take a picture when I'm in the area on Sunday.

I used to live near there too...  just behind Tamales Alberto.
