A lot of people missed his 2014 contribution to the Unlimited Project, which unfortunately never saw a physical release. The videos are luckily still on YT including this mix where they let the drums roll solo for several minutes before bringing in the rest of the musicians.
A lot of music people have that "Fela" moment in their life - it's one of those things I wish I could re-experience for the first time again. But my point is that Tony Allen is largely responsible for that moment.
Yes exactly that - it was a moment like "oh shit, there's another complete language of groove that can move me the same as the old funk I'm obsessed with that I've never heard before". RIP to a guy whose achievements as an individual musician probably can't ever be bettered.
Randomly was craving some Fela yesterday while in the yard and wife was like “I think his drummer died”. Had no idea, guess The universe was telling me something.
In similar news, Manu Dibango died from COVID at the end of March, tried searching but didn’t see any mentions of it.
he made so much dope music the past 15-20 years that just seemed to kind of fly under the radar. I'm big fan of Psycho On Da Bus, and Homecooking has some nice rap experiments on it. The man never stopped expanding on the possibilities of afrobeat.
I still buy almost 100% of my music in physical form but the Unlimited Project album was one of the few in the last decade I downloaded as it does not exist on CD or vinyl. Here’s the “raw” studio version of Tony solo for a few minutes first:

Nigerian pioneering drummer Tony Allen, a co-founder of the Afrobeat musical genre, died in Paris on Thursday aged 79, his manager says.
"We don't know the exact cause of death," Eric Trosset told AFP, adding it was not linked to the coronavirus.
Allen was the drummer and musical director of musician Fela Kuti's famous band Africa '70 in the 1960-70s.
Fela, who died in 1997, once said that "without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat".
