I shall opine on this later, after having caned many, many pints of lager, with a contrarian and thoroughly idiosyncratic list from far outside of the mainstream.
    But first: lager frenzy.

This is really the best way to approach any situation, I find.

Won't be no KPM, no Feelings, might be a Bruton as I just walked down Bruton Street and duly paid silent homage to former glories. The street has largely gone the same way as the unions that gave rise to the library studios. Faceless, anonymous, irrelevant.

Library records are better when you take the best track and put it on a compilation

Indeed. Makes them hard to justify holding on to generally because we are way to old and deep in this follishness to hold on to one-trackers.

I remember being underwhelmed by Psycheground, but I only heard it the one time at someone's spot. The others I have not heard, though, so ESSENTIAL HEADZ KNOW THE TRANSACTION?

Conroy Library - Stefano Torossi - Feelings
Reminds me of Isaac Hayes with an Italian touch

I've heard great things from Brian Bennett on compilations is there one record that stands out from him? KPM dude

Never understood why the Lauth quartett demands such a price. Decent? Yes, but not up there with other libraries which are way cheaper....

I agree, but I think it's a "different strokes for different strokes" thing.

For example, the Tele-Music series with Georges Teperino on them (I think there are 4 of them) are all experimental electronic/synth free-sound noodling that sounds exactly like a hellish nightmare to me, yet they command good cash and are in demand.

There are 2 nice cuts on Lauth Quartet. I saw a sealed one go for about $400, which is much more than I'd pay, but also understandable.

I hear you. And yes, there are a few tracks on there which are great. Glad I found mine a decade ago for a few euros...

Italian ones are coveted. Umiliani! Il corpo and 'em. Black and white angels is very enjoyable.

Jacky Giordano is another fave. Pop in devil's train.

But for the avoidance of doubt, there are tons of more recent cd generation libraries that are way more on point, and here's a selection, even forgetting the Deep Funk/Sound Stylistics of this world.

    Dirty Jazz - Chappell, 2006
Hip Jazz Hustle - Match, 2005
Retro Acid Jazz - James Taylor Qt - Bruton, 1995
The Hustle -James Taylor Qt - Bruton, 2004
Phuture Sound of Jazz - Match
Jazz Funk Decades - Cavendish, 2007
Smooth Jazz Funk - Paul Hardcastle, Carlin
    Funk Anthology - Chappell, 2000
    Funk Connection - TeleMusic 2004

    ...and there's many more.

Yes, not authentic library of the old stripe but then any notion of authenticity in library is a tad disingenuous, no?

My job involves copious use of production library music. I should write up a proper comprehensive guide to interesting sub-labels and releases I've come across next time I've got some time at work, but everything always tends to be so rushed you just click samples nearly at random till you find something that'll work. Here's some stuff that jumps to mind though:

The modern funk band Speedometer (Soul Fire, Freestyle etc.) did a Chappell album called Ghetto Funk that is on par with any of their other stuff. I remember putting one of the tracks in a show and being like "damn, this sounds way better than most squeaky clean library attempts at soul/funk", then googling the composer name and going "oh right, them".

Also a lot of long-running libraries have remix series of their back catalogues that turn up some interesting stuff: Chappell has a NUGGETS series that has a lot of their old electronics stuff remixed by Herbaliser, Coldcut, and so on, and KPM has at least a couple of 1000-series remix albums, etc.

Yes the KPM remixes (eg OffBeats, Reworked/Revisited are good but others are often better - the Match 209 cd 'Soul Jazz Remix' is excellent.

For anyone intrigued by and not actively seeking neolibs out, apart from Ghetto Funk and Deep Funk, THE strongest set is 'Old School Classics' (Atmosphere ATMOS CD 158).

Guaranteed no one will be disappointed when they pop that disc in the player.
Not sure if eBay have nixed the lib cd sales though.

Think I did a few cuts from that on an old Record Day thread, ended up sending files out to strutterrs across the globe. Will do again once I have Internet installed next month.
