NPR thinks this guy is the 2nd coming of Sam Cooke.
Me? Not so much.

Thought about it because I am listening to this great lp.
Sounds like Lou Rawls paying tribute to Sam Cooke, in Muscle Shoals with Rick Hall & David Axelrod producing.

As far as retro Texas soul singers go, Latasha Lee > Leon Bridges.

You know Leon Bridges sounds nice.
It's the hype that irks me.
His song better man sounds more like Bob Dylan than Sam Cooke.
Every soul singer sounds a little like SC, or else they are not doing it right.

Thanks for the Latasha. Shes nice too.
Sounds exactly like Rita Marley at Studio One.

basically this appears where it is going --- he'll jump the shark before he even puts on his water skis.

i'm not mad at his songs though, just think the Sam Cooke comparison (which he must seem to be comfortable with) won't do him any favors in the long run.

Damn he sounds amazing. I love it. Fuck the comparisons...they aren't the artist's fault.

  • i am all the way down with this kid and his music.

so far as the comparisons being "unfair"? i would say that based on that visuals he's chosen for a music video, he's not exactly playing down any parallels.

My barber told me about this cat a few weeks ago, but I never checked in.

Sounds good to me! I can understand the comparisons as part of generating hype and/or just genuine excitement from people who aren't hardened soulies.

I would much rather hear this music come through the radio than the awful and endless EDMpop-rap assault.

It's sufficiently fauxback enough to pique my interest. Dap-Kings production would have helped it keep my interest. The Saun & Starr LP is much better.
