^ Without spoilers, what is your review of "the scene"?
. I was afraid somebody would ask. I actually thought it was pretty funny, mostly because of Matthew's acting and the ridiculousness of it all. Plus the scene that followed was even funnier because of it. Of course at the same time I'm sort of uncomfortable with finding that funny in the first place- which might be the point.

That makes a lot of sense to me, now that I think about it. The ending of Bug (also by Letts and Friedkin) is the most nightmare-ish, awful thing, after a whole movie of mainly psychological horror. It really does make you own the ending given that you came looking for a horror movie.

So it's apt that the ending of a seedy movie about trailer trash up to no good ends like that.

Wife and I watched Sunset Boulevard the other night and of course enjoyed it.

    Highly recommend.

What I liked about it is that it felt like a play. In a good way! A lot of the scenes are long takes of dialogue and the actors seemed autonomous (ironic given the state of Bernie), doing little things that didn't look particularly "directed" so it had a spontaneous feel.

I loved W@B as a kid. "Hi Tawny! I'm horny!". I saw 'The Big Red One' (I don't normally watch war movies, but this was excellent) and 'Crooklyn' (only familiar with the music video before. I thought I accidentally sat on the remote and screwed up the widescreen view during the house guest sequence!) last week.

Never really liked Navajo Joe, but The Great Silence is G.O.A.T.

Without revealing much for those who haven't seen this (now better known as Violent City), the race car fiasco and last scene with the elevator put this over for me. The soundtrack was used or covered by a few people, too.

Some celebrity gossip "news" I read last year made a big stink about James Woods with a younger girlfriend. "Long live the new flesh!", indeed!

    Marty.

Borgnine the butcher with game? Boy, he talked that girl's ear off but by the end of their date she was ready for that D and doing her damnedest to play it cool while Marty's friends would rather comb the streets for babes. Pretty great movie, and obviously a Best Picture.

I know it's not a movie but I just started watching the series 'Kolchak: The Night Stalker'. I can see how it was a big influence on 'The X-files'.

    Mulder and Scrappy.

  • Bladerunner.
Now makes listening to Theo Parrish's 'Solitary Flight' more emotional.
    "Time To Die" *fritzes out*.
    Very sad.
Love the location of that end showdown, and the 'toys'. Those hover cars were a bit shonky though.

Midnight Express. Hard. Believable in parts. Liked it.

    it's so sweeet in 70mm!

we're gonna go see barry lyndon in december at the lightbox. it's not 70mm, but i've never seen on a big screen.

  • I saw "Prisoners" the other night. Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal were in roles very different than their usual likeable characters. Very well-written, dark and creepy movie although the ending was ultimately unsatisfying.

I've seen both, newly restored, during the past couple of days. Loads of visual stimulation.

  • I recently had the pleasure of attending a small screening of this almost-lost classic:

The story goes that the original film reels were rescued from imminent incineration by a passionate aussie, to be restored and recently re-released. Watched the movie with the director himself and got a ton of great anecdotes about his experience making the film on location in the Australian outback.

Bonus trivia: the movie is one of only two to ever be screened twice at Cannes.

Highly recommend if you are able to come by a copy.
