I did my first MTB ride in 10 or so years yesterday, I'm still hurting but cant wait to get back out there!

  • Despite it being only nine months old IÔÇÖve somehow managed to destroy the forks on my bike, and IÔÇÖve been waiting over two weeks to get them replaced.

So IÔÇÖm giving serious consideration to getting a dedicated commuter bike. IÔÇÖm thinking some kind of steel, flat bar road bike. If there were any for sale IÔÇÖd probably go for a Cotic Roadrat (https://www.cotic.co.uk/product/roadrat#duckegg):

As there donÔÇÖt seem to be any IÔÇÖm thinking maybe one of these Project X Kaffenbacks (http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CBPXKAFF2FBTIA/planet-x-kaffenback-2-shimano-tiagra-flat-bar):

    Any other suggestions?

Duke that Masi is stunning. Do you know what seat post that is? Looks like a custom painted Kent Erikson, of so that is straight bike porn. The stem looks like a Kelly, also proper flipping nice - love the whole thing man. You don't see too many of those storage tubes, what can you keep inside them?

I ran a Merida Crossway for a couple of years and it was great.

    Or a Cannondale Badboy

I liked the Merida because the fork took the sting out of a lot of shortcuts on the commute.

In shock news, I might be commuting inner-city if the traffic on the new gig is soul-destroying.

    Wish me luck.

    RIP Stackswell.

Yeah, flat bar commuto-road bikes are all pretty dialed now.

Toby.d: brother is pleased to report thats an Eriksen Sweetpostt. Stem was custom made by Winter Cycles, in Portland i think, to accommodate new bars and old steer tube size. I think dude made the fork too. Storage tube is painted carbon. I'd like to say my brother puts a bong in there but I bet it's just a tube and whatever.

I've been trying to get kicked off Strava by getting records on the e-bike, but it has to be hills of a certain steepness for it to work out for me. Amazing to go 17mph for a half mile climb and be out of the top ten! There are a lot of really strong bike people around here, but I really cannot imagine beating this super machine up a hill. I'm trying to jam the system, but the top dudes are insanely fast.

I checked some of the Strava times on my work commute.

I guess Bradley Wiggins worked at my place and I never knew it.

Either that, or some c*nt had a Ducati and a wicked sense of humor.

Grope!!!! Are those yours?? Very nice. Love the first one.

I don't know if I would want to steal that Jenga bike!! I do like the idea of a locking system built into a frame design so there's no need for an external lock. I worry about stability/rigidity issues though.

For quick trips into a store or food spot, I have stopped locking my bike TO things, and just lock the wheel to the frame. I'll run a motherfucker down if he's gonna try to take off carrying my bike! But I do worry that I am tempting fate.

One more day of work, then off for two weeks. Can't wait to get in some longer rides on the bike. I wish I had some scenery like Jimster to ride in though! Might have to take a trip down to the Niagara area for some picturesque country riding.

    Bikes!!

I wanted to buy the first one. It's expensive (1100 Euros) and I doubt that it's a bike for the city. It's more like an old school speed bike from the 30s... the wheelbase is extreme. But I love the style and the details. I'd buy a more rational version for the city immediately.

    getting there, slowly.
next up is cables (dark brown VO set purchased), cut steerer tube, cut seatpost, bar wrap and a full tune. I'm digging the oatmeal coloring of the saddle. I'll report on the comfort after I've been able to take it for a proper ride.

I went with the 700x28 Panaracer T-serv tires. I basically wanted something with decent enough flat protection and a reflective sidewall for night riding-- but I didn't think the weight/price of the Schwalbe's fit my weight-goals or budget. If I was working with a larger budget, I'd upgrade the seatpost and pedals to something lighter and more aesthetically pleasing immediately, but that will come at a later date I suppose.

Feel free to let me know your thoughts-- it's my first build, so any suggestions re: setup of brifters/tuning are appreciated.

Steerer tube protruding above stem. Bike snobs have killed folk for lesser sins.
    Hacksaw job, five minutes.

I dont think they hit you with the ban hammer, more like if you get a KOM and some one is asshurt/suspicious about it they report your ride. I had one of my rides reported as strava had incorrectly put me along a mountain bike trail which ran parallel to the road (which I was riding on), I got the KOM and my ride was reported less than 2 hours later haha! Strava then removed the history of my ride all together and emailed me to verify if it was in a vehicle or on my bike, they then some how managed to extract my time for that segment, funnily enough the guy who's KOM i beat has been going after one of my legit KOM's on his roadie for ages!

    That Soma is looking great!

Tires with puncture protection are slower than tires with a supple fast casing. I still use puncture resistant tires. I haven't had a flat in over a year. I used to get flats every other week with my 700x25c race tires. I'm not sure if that stopped because the tires are now larger and have less pressure or the casing is puncture resistant. Probably a combination of the two.

I stopped using Strava because I'm too competitive and it was going to kill me. I was knocking off KOMs anywhere I could find them and running stop signs and stop lights to do it. Then I found out the city of San Diego might use Strava data to help make San Diego more bike friendly, and I started logging my commute again.

I'm loving Strava right now, as the tracks my GPS pumps out are more accurate than my friends' iPhone GPS approximations (triangulate offa cell towers, no?). In the turns and twists of our local mountain bike trails, my times are showing me faster than dudes I absolutely cannot stay with. It is hilarious!

e-Bike city rip yesterday saw my friend's whole route kicked, due to mega KOM smashes on well-traveled routes. I forgot my Garmin in his garage (izzat irony?) but predict my times will be dismissed too.

I put a shorter stem and a brand new Hans Dampf on my trail bike.

    UN.
    STOP.
    PABLE.

    and shit.

    Seattle's summer keeps on rolling!

finished the SOMA build last week. commuted on it all week. It's awesome.
still getting some control/handlebar adjustments worked out, and I've got some cheap-o pleather wrap on there now. I'm planning on re-wrapping with a brown gel/cork combo once I get it all set up perfect. Think I'll stick with double-sided touring pedals for now, I sent back the clipped road pedals as they were faulty out of the box (cracked bearing race). Chainrings making some weird pop/creak under initial load, I'll have to disassemble/grease and reassemble w/ red loctite this time instead of blue.
I've never owned a bike this light/fast (and it's not really even that light.) Total blast to ride. Pics once I remember to take a few.

I am not a bike guy at all, but this thread is awesome...I bought a foldable $150 bike once, it was a piece of crap. I took it on my local fishing trips.

Any of you guys put LED lights on your wheels? or is that just a novelty/fad for kids??
Looks pretty cool when i see people at night. Safety-wise seems like a good move.

I switched up the Salsa Casseroll to be a little more of a randonneuring set up. I upped the tire size to 700x38 with no ill-effects so far. These tires actually seem faster than the 700x35 puncture-resistant tires I had previously. I am running about 75psi in them. There is a new stem that's a little higher and longer than the previous one so my knees don't hit the bars when I climb anymore. The drop bars have a little upsweep and flare out a bit now. I'm liking the increased hand positions and can get into the drops more easily now. I also added a decaleur (bag holder/stabilizer) to be attached to the new handlebar bag when I get it.

I just cleaned my bikes. Mothballing them for a few months. Shoulder surgery in two days. Bumming.

Good luck with the surgery, speedy recovery.

Not ridden for one month at the moment. And last night twisted my knee good-style.

Citibikes are OK. Shame that due to the prospect of theft & resale/parting-out, nearly all the components are non-standard sizes and bikes are not "Attractively" styled, to drive down desirability.
