Being reported that he passed this afternoon at 93.

Bummer. Definitely one of the jazz artists whos records initially wowed me and got me hooked in the early digging years. And one of my favorites still.

Was just listening to this earlier, too...

Rest In Peace

"Love Theme from Spartacus" will always remain a key tune for me. Quintessence of beauty and simplicity. Farewell Mr.Lateef.

  • Oh man, this guy is such a titan. Such a great player, always experimenting with obscure instruments to great effect and synthesizing beautifull soundscapes from diverse sources. And what a composer, he had a phenomenal ear for melody. One of the few who always played class from the getgo and knever let up. One of my great regrets is never seeing him live. Does anyone know when he stopped performing?

love so many of his LP's, but this one left a lasting impression on me from an early age. It's hard to choose a song the whole thing just swings.

so much variety and mastering of the craft

  • I met him by chance a few years back, he was a very sweet and peaceful man.

I walked down the aisle at my wedding to his music, he's forever a part of my life.
