I'm generally against 5 or more strings. If Carol Kaye and James Jamerson used four strings everyone else can use four. I can see how notes lower than E would come in handy but I don't think the tone is good and I hate clicky rattle.

If James Jamerson can rock the fuck out of everything on a four string and a single finger (and he doesn't even do fretboard gymnastics or go past the 9th fret really) then everyone else is just stroking their own cock.
