When he first played it for me, it was a more middle of the road R&B song, done in an adult contemporary style. Kanye had the idea of combining that track with a cool sample he had found and liked ??? I removed all of the R&B elements leaving only a single note baseline in the hook which we processed to have a punk edge in the Suicide tradition.
We were working on a Sunday [the same day West attended a baby shower for girlfriend Kim Kardashian] and the album was to be turned in two days later. Kanye was planning to go to Milan that night. Five songs still needed vocals and two or three of them still needed lyrics. He said, ???Don???t worry, I will score 40 points for you in the fourth quarter.??? In the two hours before had to run out to catch the plane, he did exactly that: finished all lyrics and performed them with gusto. A remarkable feat. He had total confidence in his ability to get the job done when push came to shove.

Also, I can't even be bothered getting into some type Brandon Soderberg "how dare people have an opinion different from mine" bullshit over this. I can completely understand people not liking this record, just as I can understand the scepticism about the critical response. There's nothing that galvanises critics more than when a controversial performer makes A Statement. Like I've said on here before, 'Ye polarises people - shit, even particular 'Ye records polarise people. Nothing wrong with that.
FWIW I like it, and since I'm not trying to sell it to anyone, it makes no real difference to me who else does or doesn't.

Nah, not at all. Just that I'd always understood that his attitude towards rap was, generally speaking, pretty hostile.
I actually think this is a really good and insightful review. Quite a few of the positives chime with my own, as it happens, so that might have something to do with it.

It is great that I was able to do that, I'm not trying to shun that in any way, but it's definitely a Catch-22 and it's bittersweet.40 Even amidst all the cheers, I can never quite enter into la-la land. And the fact that these issues are always looming is why I get paid the big bucks. Because I'm so conscious of all these things, I put it in my music and everyone relates to it.2 I believe that my music is inspirational.13 I'm not about making music to market by. I'm about making stuff that people love.8 I want people to remember me the way they know Nike, that level of impact. Who was the last person who really had it like that? When I was a kid, it seems like there was a lot of great pop music. There was George Michael, Michael Jackson.23
I think the press has an agenda to try to make people not like me, because they realize what my voice can do.28 That's why I hate written and printed interviews because they don't fuck with how I talk. They gotta cut the words down.33 The press don???t make me.1 The media is scared of me. They're scared of a black man with this taste level.33 I'm an artist that people love to hate. Even if they love me sometimes they just like to talk shit about me, because there are very few artists who stand up for what they believe in.17
People are not going to agree with everything I do. I look back and look at stuff I do and don't agree with it. Man, if I made a dis record of myself, I would kill me. I would be extremely good at it.33bCriticism can bother you, but you should be more bothered if there???s no criticism. That means you???re too safe.24
There's nothing more to be said about music. I'm the fucking end-all, be-all of music. I know what I'm doing.5 I think what Kanye West is going to mean is something similar to what Steve Jobs means. I am undoubtedly, you know, Steve of Iinternet, downtown, fashion, culture. Period. By a long jump. I honestly feel that because Steve has passed, you know, it???s like when Biggie passed and Jay-Z was allowed to become Jay-Z.7
I only rap reality!33 There???s no reality to celebrity.16 I'm never too good for anything.42 I'm just reacting what my soul tell me to do.43 I will die for what???s in my heart.44
Now let's talk about how my fucking sweater didn't come back right from Korea. That's what's interesting me.5

FWIW I like it, and since I'm not trying to sell it to anyone, it makes no real difference to me who else does or doesn't.
Nah, not at all. Just that I'd always understood that his attitude towards rap was, generally speaking, pretty hostile.
I actually think this is a really good and insightful review. Quite a few of the positives chime with my own, as it happens, so that might have something to do with it.
