Whether it was mainstream or lesser known, I just want a top 5 list from you folks. I have a movie night with old school friends a few times a year (getting older related), and I'm hosting. Before we head to a local bar, I want to show a movie, and I think it should be funny and put people in good spirits. Dry humour would be appreciated.

I like "The Party", even though it could be interpreted as "Brown Face", as a brownie, my Dad loves it and introduced it to me, and I loved it as a kid, and now as well. The mannerisms are tight, it's just classic!

Cheers

There is a best comedy thread somewhere.
In it I reped My Cousin Vinnie. I think people were embarrassed for me.

    1) My Cousin Vinnie
    2) Spinal Tap
    3) Dr Strangelove (Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb)
    4) Trading Places
    5) It's A Mad Mad Mad World

I think IAMMMW would go over well with a crowd. My guess is that you and your friends are to young to realize that the movie is filled with a dizzying array of the top comedy actors of the time and earlier times. Bonus Trivia James Brown released It's a Man's World as It's A Mans Mans Mans World to capitalize on the movie.

There is no "funniest" ever on my personal list.

I can watch Spinal Tap and Coming To America over and over and over and over......

Delirious was mindblowing when it came out. Even more so than the Richard Live stuff.

  • Think the original version of Taking of Pelham 123 is one of the most underrated films for comedy dialogue.

Off the top of the head three, in no particular order:

    Airplane
    Blazing Saddles
    Monty Python & Holy Grail

  • I couldnt give them a place but five of my favorite for sure would be:

    -Rushmore
    -Coming to America
    -Ghostbusters
    -Observe and Report
    -Big Lebowski

I don't think Airplane is that funny but the disco dance scene is some of my favorite stuff EVER.

    Co-sign.

All the musical references in that shit is hilarious. Huey Newton is too Black, Whitney Houston, Phil Collins vs Peter Gabriel.
    Oh shit type shit.

I gotta return some VHS tapes.

If It's Tuesday, It Must Be Belgium: Kind of like "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World" meets "European Vacation"

Mr. Mike's Mondo Video: Old school SNL cast parody of Italian shock-docs ("Mondo Cane", etc)

that's one of my favourite movies in any genre but its not exactly "ha ha" funny. jerry lewis' is so dark and brooding in that flic.

"the jerk" still makes me laugh after all these years.

  • i revisited don't be a menace recently and was shocked at the editing. like real amateurish pauses and silences between gags. kinda weird. that movie still has some great stuff. those dudes shoulda hung it up after that though. they blew their wad; subsequent "scary movie," "teenie movie," "white girls," etc. were all bad; way too obvious.

Thanks for the responses. I really missed out on a lot of classics, which should be fun catching up with.

I thought "Election" was hilarious and watched it multiple times..

Depending on age and state of mind, I've laughed like crazy to:

    Naked Gun
    Superbad
    40 year old virgin
    Swingers
    Half Baked
Play it again Sam (and Annie Hall of course)
    CB4

Cosign on Airplane, Shaun of the dead and the Big Lebowski.

I also think American Splendor is really funny, in a dryer sort of way. Also, a movie that never gets enough credit for its comedic elements: The Seventh Seal.

  • Was a Jim Carey fan,

    Ace Ventura
    The Mask

  • The first 2 National Lampoon Vaction movies
    Planes Trains and Automobiles
    Caddyshack
    The Jerk
    Kingpin
    Airplane
    Election
    Coming To America
    Trading Places

    recent stuff:
    The Hangover
    Cedar Rapids
