I have no idea. Isn't Oppa Korean for big brother? Or older brother in which a girl would call an older guy friend?

But in my mind garden it stands for...

  • I'm officially this dudes #1 fan (now). Korean Conan O'Brian Style like what

Don't sleep on KPOP! UK shows we're involved with are selling out in a couple of hours and only a fraction of the audience is Korean. Gotta say it's kind of fun and a refreshing change from Rihanna/Gaga/Minaj's proto--porno stylings...

It's funny that after all kpop's hard work and desperation to get noticed by a wider Western audience, this is what crosses over.

Yep, Oppa is what girls call a slightly older male in Korea. Gangnam is the super bourgie suburb of Seoul. So he's basically saying he's this rich, fun loving, playboy dude for the ladies.

    That would be HyunA

To keep everything strut relate, in a six degrees of separation kinda way..

Psy is on the same label and produced by the same dude as; girl group 2NE1 (who've been working with Wil.i.am and plotting world domination) & also Big Bang, the biggest boyband in Korea, who've have released tracks produced by former onetime strut poaster Diplo.

Here's a breakdown of the satire present in the video. He's basically ripping on the shallow materialism of Gangnam:

"Koreans have been kind of caught up in this spending to look wealthy, and Gangnam has really been the leading edge of that," Hong said. "I think a lot of what [Psy] is pointing out is how silly that is. The whole video is about him thinking he's a hotshot but then realizing he's just, you know, at a children's playground, or thinking he's playing polo or something and realizes he's on a merry-go-round."

None of this commentary is particularly overt, which is actually what could make "Gangnam Style" so subversive. Social commentary is just not really done in mainstream Korean pop music, Hong explained. "The most they'll do is poke fun at themselves a little bit. It's really been limited." But Psy "is really mainstreaming it, and he's doing it in a way that maybe not everybody quite realizes."

I'm at a cafe in Little Tokyo right now and I'm pretty sure this song is some guy's ring tone b/c I keep hearing it every 10 minutes.

For your Modern Pop Culture essays and dates with pop culture junkies:

  • I DJed an event for Fashion's Night Out last week and played "Gangnam Style" just to be funny. It got the biggest response hands down. Girls were galloping around doing that crossed-hand drumming dance.

Is this the biggest pop culture phenomenon from South Korea to hit America (not counting the Kia or Hyundai )?

    B/W:

BIGBANG video filmed in Brooklyn (Williamsburg) this past winter.
