... variously try to rekindle long lost loves that never happened (Doobies/ Fool Believes), or where he treated her bad (Chapin/ WOLD), or where he wants a reminisce- blap (England Dan/ John Ford Coley - Really Love To See. You Tonight).

A dog returneth not to his own vomit.

What else is out there?

I might have had a couple bottles of cheap rose wine tonight but I would never, EVER revisit past failures. Never that.

    Oh, how terrible!

    Come on Skel.

    After you hurt me,
    After I hurt you,
And all of my bad dreams,
    One by one, came true

    You saId it was goodbye
    But the eyes never lie
    And I knew
    That it was only Jive.

So you found a new lover to wear your crown,
And I found a cheap flat up in Chinatown,
I saw you with stoned stars,
    In chic bars, downtown malls
But I knew that is was only jive.

You cut me loose, I hit the juice,
    Somebody deep inside me died.
    Who punched that tune,
    Who hit the moon?
Who made the dimestore gypsy lie?

You ain't got no love, Jones,
    Not for me, not much
Then how come the sparks fly
    Everytime we touch
    The meaning becomes clear
    Everytime you are near
    Baby, it's only Jive.

    Baby, it's only Jive.
    Baby, it's only Jive.

HAHA! I meant that comment for this song, but maybe it all worked out for the best.

BC's tune has the right sentiment, but a pity that it is country.
This mini genre needs a slick and bright classy pop treatment to emphasise the disparity between deluded optimism at the outset and the final outcome that we in the audience know is coming.

Anyways, like most here no doubt, I have been both giver and receiver of the goodbye look, but have learned that when you harbour a grudge there is no room for the good times ship to dock.

And remember kids, everything turns out ok in the end: and if it's not ok, it's not the end.

    Fortune cookie interlude over.

    Onwards my dudes, onwards.

Country the ideal port for such ships to dock, doe. Steel guitars weep all over it. Four-hungry-children-and-a-crop-in-the-field-R.

Phil C*llins - Against All Odds
Jacko - She's Out Of My Life
Bruvanood of Man - Tie a Yellow Ribbon...?

    1 & 3 have a happy ending, no?

    Out of the running.

Admittedly, Jacko pining for reigniting a lost woman love is somewhat incongruous.

That's some 'left field' thinking right there. Bonus points.

Does 1 have a happy ending? It's not a tune I solicit on the reg and cannot recall the lyrics verbatim. Although, I am not knocking musical ability of man nor depth of game in the broaken heartedness arena. This is a man who faxed a divorce through, a cutting-edge move at the time. Bravo. All flavours of bitter pills tested.

I myself have rekindled old flames and found it to be better second time a-round. But I can tell the difference between a light that never dies, and glowing vomit. I am not picking the carrots out of the latter.

I have been [the] giver of the goodbye look,

    I have never.

There's no way imma look up the Collins lyrics, but perception is that this is solo dude lamentation quite soon after the fact. Miserablist's self pity.
    A terrible look.

The others are dude actually attempting the rewind, and getting crushed. She's moved on, new horizons, new man, new hairdo prolly.

("Kay" by John Wesley Ryles) has the right sentiment, but a pity that it is country.

Then tune into "Taxi" by Harry Chapin, which has a similar storyline - a guy driving a cab while his former girlfriend becomes a star. Only in Chapin's record, the girl is actually a passenger in his cab, and the ride is really tense and awkward.

And remember kids, everything turns out ok in the end: and if it's not ok, it's not the end.

If you believe in karma, Harry had a later song called "Sequel," where the tables are turned - now HE'S that star (thanks to that damned "Taxi" song) and SHE'S the has-been. But revenge songs aren't what this thread is about...

This mini genre needs a slick and bright classy pop treatment to emphasise the disparity between deluded optimism at the outset and the final outcome that we in the audience know is coming.

There's a version of "Kay" by Billy Lee Riley which is done up in a Southern blue-eyed soul style. It's on Youtube. But I get the impression you're looking for slick Kenny Loggins pop...

On the sad taxi driver tip... Controller man has good West Mids accent for big Anglophiles.

    CAR 67
    (Paul Phillips / Peter Zorn)

    Driver 67 (vocal: Paul Phillips) - 1978

(Car 67, car 67, where are you?)
(Come in 67, 67, can you hear me?)

Hey Control, this is 67 here
I can hear you loud and I can hear you clear, yeah
    Control, this is 67 here
I can hear you loud and I can hear you clear, yeah

    (Good morning 67, good morning
Bit of a late start, isn't it?)

Is there something that you want me to do-ooh, yeah
(Yes, we have a job for you)
You know I'm only here to please you-ooh
(We want you to pick up a young lady at 83 Royal Gardens)

    Control have mercy on me
I don't wanna do the pick-up, isn't anybody else free?
Stuck in a jam in a one-way street
Why don't you tell her she'd be quicker if she used her feet, yeah

    (You must be joking 67)
(Now, come on I must have a time for the pick-up)

The best that I can do
    Is tell you tomorrow, yeah
'Cause if I do the job
    It's gonna cause me sorrow-ooh

(Oh, really 67, you're putting me in a bad position)
(This is too bad, too bad)
(I must have a time for the pick-up)
    (What's you're problem?)
    (What's wrong 67?)

    To tell you the truth
I had a bad, bad night
    My girl left home
In the middle of a fight

(Sorry about that 67, sorry to hear that)

    Controller have mercy on me
    I don't wanna do the pick-up at number 83
And the girl of my dreams left me all alone
And at number 83 is where she made her home

    (Ah-hah, I see 67, I understand your problem)

Is there something else you want me to do-ooh, yeah
(Yes, you can have another job 67)
You know I'm only here to please you
(Stand by all cars, stand by)
(Time for a pick-up at 83 Royal Gardens)
(First call for 83 Royal Gardens)
(Can somebody give me a time for the pick-up?)
(Stand by 67, we'll have an other job for you shortly)
(Calling all cars, calling all cars)
(Time for a pick-up at 83 Royal Gardens)
(First call to 83 Royal Gardens)
    (Somebody give me a time)
(Can you do it car 23?)
