I've been pruning the collection a bit, looking through jazz recs and being like, "why do I have 5 John Patton records"
So I've got a couple boxes of stuff ready to go down to the shop, and I'm wondering, what are the ones yall feel are necessary? I know what I kept!
Let's see 'em..............

I still need a copy of Electric Funk........totally essential, and I had forgotten about it until right now. Gotta stop only chasing 45s....I'm missing out.
I like both LP's, but I prefer Accent because it hasn't dated as much (and James "Blood" Ulmer is on it). Let 'Em Roll is fine, but that swingin' James Bond-a-go-go sound doesn't go but so far. Every time I listen to that album, I feel like I'm in an Austin Powers movie.
The REAL John Patton heat is Understanding, where he goes all the way out in left field with Harold Alexander's avant-garde sax.
YUP. agree on alla that.
But that 'Let 'em Roll' sleeve is something I still need to have in my life, and in my collection. Still waiting to run into it somewhere. And I still dig that record, but not as much as Understanding. The later issue 'Boogaloo' I think had a similar line up and sound. Check for that.
agreed ... this is the only patton / jazz organ lp.. that doesnt sound like background music in a really dusty record shop to me.
only one ive kept in the collection.
Doesn't that title track make you wanna play some air organ? Jimmy is taking a LONG solo on that one, all while grunting and "singing" along with his own riffs, and yes, he's wanking, but I always wind up wishing he'd gone on LONGER!
is that on solid state?
i want blacksmith
yo i got that for you.
pm me
John Patton "Understanding" is so necessary. Right now I think I'm only keeping that and "Accent On The Blues"
Tonight when I get home I am axing Reuben Wilson "Groovy Situation" I think. Should I keep it?
Other casualties:
Rusty Bryant "Soul Liberation" (kept Wild Fire though)
ENTIRE GENE AMMONS SECTION
why???????
LONNIE SMITH IS NEXT!!!! NO ONE IS SAFE!!!!!!
Yes
Don't kill that one.
You will like it again later.
Really.
Plus it's only a $15 record. No use in selling it.
Please give me all $15 copies of drives.
We do a bit better with it over here
(I actually am probably not axing it... I kinda like it (shut up dicksnot))
But Move Your Hand is good too.... SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE
plaese.
MELVIN SPARKS IS ON THE LIST
I think "Sparkplug" is going, "Sparks!" is staying
Go ahead & get rid of it. (That album wasn't moving me any mountains either.)
What do you know about a track called
"Dig The Thing G" by Bill Doggett...???

That's it?
Another favorite of mine is Leon Spencer's "Where I'm Coming From" on Prestige.
I wish that title track was on a 45.
Did I see someone getting rid of Rusty Bryant - Soul Liberation?
That 45 is great! How's the rest of the album?
If anyone else here is into organ jazz 45s, get "Boo-D-Doo" by McDuff on Prestige. Found it a while back & it's a great mover. Not funky, but damn good.
Also check his "I Just Can't Stop Dancing" on World Pacific. Great version.
I didn't like The Loop that much. I really enjoy most of Jimmy Smith's records.
Some German Jazz organists:
Dieter Reith - he has recorded great Jazz music
Ingfried Hoffmann - not for his Memphis Black stuff, but for his early Jazz records
I like John Patton's records. My favorite would be the Understanding LP. I like Jimmy McGriff too.
