Now that run of the mill used VHS tapes are hovering somewhere around $1 retail, I've been buying them like crazy. Fuck the video store, even fuck the library - I at least know they never have to go back. And for a buck, who cares?I have amassed so many I could build a small structure out of them.It seems like people have really been unloading them lately.Anyone else the same way?

  • I was thinking about this the other day but not VHS. I was wondering if anyone collects LaserDiscs? I mean I find a ton of them when I go out digging for a dollar at the thrift stores. I have been told LaserDiscs are video wise very very close to DVD but the audio isn't 5.1 or something like that. Also I see LD players on ebay for mad cheap. Anyone like LaserDiscs or come across some ill jonts that they haven't found on VHS or DVD?

I see them laying around, usually for $5 and under. Occasionally I'll flip through them just for curiosity's sake... of course, I usually just see regular movies. Although I recently saw New Jack City and was tempted slightly... nto sure why though.

I know there are some collectors of them but only for the raerist of raer shit.

I pick them up occasionally too. I don't see a whole lot of them... I see more video store Kung Fu cast-offs.

I have 5 sisqo vhs tapes hommie.

  • still using beta. vhs would be "that new shit" for me.

    you beat me to it.

  • Also, I used to work at a laserdisc shop, which was the shit, becuase this was before DVD came out, so we basicly attracted all the cinophiles, and had the dope selection. So I bought a player and some discs, and like two years later I'm outmoded. But it's rad right now becuase I can still scoop titles like Casino or whatever for 2.99. And yeah, the video is comprable to CD, good sound usually, but not often 5.1. AND you have to flip it, which I never thought was a big deal, but most people watching a movie with me seem to feel differently....

the flipping sucks, its like a one minute pause isn't it ?

something like 'Dances with wolves' would have 3 discs for example, so thats 5 odd flips !!

Holler at me with some laserdiscs, I'm looking for Westerns, Action, and Kung-fu joints!
Anyone know a good spot in NYC to find some ld's?

pioneer made LD players that played both sides, im sure other companies did too...

honestly though, laserdisc quality really isnt that much better than VHS, i have an LD player (and a beastie boys "skills to pay the bills" laserdisc i got at a garage sale this summer) and the quality is definitely nowhere near DVD...

I really should start going through those boxes of unlabeled VHS's, tapes and even those camcorder cartridges at thrift stores. I could find a lot of crazy shit. Who knows what the hell I could find...old episodes of "Soul Train"? Family vacation films? Amateur porn?!? The possibilities are endless. Too bad it's not like I could throw them on a portable player or anything. Perhaps if I pay $20 or something, I could just take the whole thing. Finding reel-to-reels would be fun, too. I remember Bambouche posted up something many moons back of a lady recording an audio suicide note or something to that effect. Creepy...

I really haven't seen 'em this cheap! Are you talking @ thrifts or where? I have been buying them some lately and would like to know some other places to look for them. Any of the big chins doing this?

If you wanted to get serious about it yopu could bring a camcorder to preview those and a small combo (like a 13" TV w/ built in VCR to check the big guys...)

I ALWAYS think this when I see unlabeled VHS movies. Especially this one....

I think that is a good idea to take a camcorder to thrifts. How much they cost now..the ones that fit VHS tapes.

  • the amoeba clearance section is a good place to find the really random video tapes... i think those are a dollar each. record surplus in west LA has a good random video section in their upstairs record clearance section as well. and i swear every thrift store i've been to has those large ziploc bags of miscellaneous vhs tapes for 5 bucks.

    anyone here collect Selectavision discs?

I live in the epicenter of the used cd/tape/record/movie/videogame chain store world. Those chains practically sell VHS tapes by the pound here.

Yeah man, I remember those things. They played with grooves and a real needle too.

With the right kind of equipment, you could probably scratch those badboys like a rekkid - although it might burn your fingers at a platter speed of 450 rpm.

The disadvantage to them was the discs were majorly delicate. In order to flip a CED disc, you had to stick the sleeve into the player to get the the platter out, take out the sleeve (with platter now inside), flip it over, and reinsert into the player (which would again extract the platter, now with the reverse side facing the stylus)..

    New DVD Rewinder

DVD Rewinder - It Will Save You Time & Money

Its cool, its fashionable and it promises to save you time and money. Its the all new DVD rewinder.

Sony's new DVD rewinder has hit the shelves this week. Department stores stayed open all night for consumers to be the first in the world to grab a DVD rewinder. Its come out just in time for Christmas next year.

This device promises to save you time by rewinding the DVD's you're too lazy to rewind. It will also save you money so that you don't have to pay a fee for returning un-rewound DVD's to the rental place.

Noby Doldrums from Sony's Digital Media department says: "Our consumers require quality products that will help save them time and money".

Some of the features include an in-built MP3 Player, a clock radio, and an optional cordless phone. The rewinder also doubles as a smoke alarm and an emergency light for times when there are blackouts.

If you call now, the first 10 orders will recieve a free magic bullet thats guaranteed to save you time and money in the kitchen. Not only will you get the magic bullet the next 100 callers will get a magic mullet cutter - guaranteed to give you the best looking mullet in town.

The rewinder comes with an optional DVD player (Not Included). It requires 10 D size batteries.

Crocodile Hunter - Steve Irwin has put his name behind the DVD rewinder. "Crikey, she's a little beauty" Steve says. A limited edition Croc Green color with Steve's signature is a big boost for Sony.

Sony's first DVD rewinder was developed back in the 80's for Michael Jackson's Thriller Filmclip as a way of recording and then rewinding the DVD for quick distribution to MTV - Jackson later reveilng the reason he wore a white glove over his deformed hand, and half a nose was missing missing was becuase they both got caught in the machine.

Later on back in the mid 90's was used as product placement on an Episode of Friends when Pheobe was recording her song "I love to do some stuff with you".

Sony's Motto is "If It Doesn't Rewind, Then Its Not Worth Having".

I started collecting LDs just about a year ago. It broke out when I found an OG/old school looking Star Wars trilogy for 300 yen ($3). On my way to school there was this place that had a dollar-bin with LDs that I'd raid every other day.

I saw on some LDphile site that the quality was "15% less" than DVDs. Ill joints that I've seen only on LD are for instance Oscar Fischinger's animation and The Frighteners LE Box that has some ill shit on there. Seen The Frighteners one reach $200 on eBay but never seen the other pop up for sale anywhere. Dope dope shit.

That's probably some transfer from a shitty source. I have LD's that look and sound very very very similar to DVDs.

this looks dope as fuck. do you own this?

i got a small stash of blaxpo and rap videos (og prt 'easy star', organized 'last piece of chicken') but i usually am hesitant to accumulate this sort of thing. i picked up modern romance (the good albert brooks movie to not come out on dvd) and that cannonball david carradine movie (with axelrod score, no?) for $2 each on vhs today, which was nice. i probably wouldn't have looked if it wasn't for this thread.

at the goodwill i once saw a beta tape with a title like XXX Soulful Sisters or something and i figured i'd never buy a beta player to watch it. every day of my life i regret that non purchase.

Unfortunately no. I went to see a friend of mine do a live set at this trendy jazz bar in Tokyo and they were playing it there. No VJ, just Oscar Fischinger on loop. Watched that shit in it's entirety probably twice through. Since then I've been on the lookout but that LD is scarce. Released on a Pioneer-run animation label that still exists, it's the most comprehensive set of his works that exists (to my knowledge). You can mail-order some VHS tapes of his work but they're expensive and broken up into volumes.
