Secrecy in Digging...

I've been wanting to make a blog... ... Problem is, I don't have much to say.Other people have the political and philosophical blogs already on lock, and a blog about my life and innermost feelings, who gives a fuck. No one would care but my mom, and since she would be reading, I'd have to censor my innermost thoughts anyhow, and shit would be a bore.So I figured I like records right? How about a record blog. In particular, lately, I've been only trying to collect Japanese records... making the most of my time while I'm here. But then, that brings up the issue of secrecy. Is it good to share this info, or should shit be kept on the down low? Someone hips you to a record, is it best to keep it quiet outta respect for them? I had been thinking about a Japanese record site, because the info is rather scare... But should it be? Should we just sit on our finds, and feel cool that we are the only one who knows about it? I know other people have made info available, take the-breaks.com, the review section here at soulstrut, Motowns record porn, Soul Man's old WOB, etc...What do you people think? Is it good or bad to share? Best to make available to anyone with an interest, or tell only a select few? Any opinions? I'm really curious, and a bit conflicted on this myself.Peace...FNM

    not forgotten by me. I love pineapples! the trouble is buying a whole pineapple can be kind of daunting. But my god, its so worth it.

    I was at a party the other night and they made some kind of jungle juice type 3 parts alcohol drink, but at the bottom there was tons of fruit! pineapples, kiwi, white grapes. Wow did i get hammered.

    Pineapple will soak up all the alcohol too.

    I think a blog about them would be perfectly warranted.

    Actually I've thought a system would be nice where you have to contribute in order to access... Like a communal database, but that would be rather hard (for me) to do.

    Point taken, and that is the issue.



    One of the problems, is after a record becomes publicly known, the price is gonna drop because it will be easier to find... And that might piss off people who sell. Or, if you're dealing with say, Japanese records, will it not be so much

    of an issue? People still gotta come here to find the shit, or eBay... And I've noticed that even yahoo japan auctions, the Japanese are pretty up on what records are worth money. But the commons go for cheap, even the really good ones, while the eBay price stays high.

    Really depends, I guess. Usually it's respectful to keep on the low about a record somebody put you up on. If you discover it yourself it's fair game.

    I don't feel a need to build a library of records only I appreciate or defraud artists, so I don't cling too much to secrets. Mostly I talk to friends interested in similar things, but sometimes in articles and the like.

    Besides, there aren't many secrets in 2005 anyways that aren't one-off acetates or west indian funk 45s. Almost guaranteed there's folks out there with knowledge you do and then some who are going to talk about that gem you found like it's no big deal.

    That's right. I agree... The thing is, the shit is unknown to YOU until you find it, or someone tells you. Just like getting hipped to a record, you passed over a hundred times. People know, but lots of people aren't talking to the people who know, ya know?

    Actually, the problem with doing a "regional" site or "specialist" site or guide is that it kinda becomes a checklist of records to get. I think this kinda happened with SPINE RARITIES too (Chris? Dave?)... that's one of the reasons why I closed down TASMAN CONNECTION, dudes just weren't hunting for more records from Australia and people thought that was it..., I felt like the site was the back of a Star Wars figure back in the day. I've thought about doing a Japanese site too, but already people have started using my eBay auctions as a checklist But anyhow, aside from that, the more information out there the better, I guess. I love hearing HEAT I ain't heard before!

    Sheep man, I hear you, and respect where you're coming from. But the secret squirrels present a bit of a problem.

    What I'm wondering is, how long is something supposed to stay a secret? If someone listens to one of your secret squirrel clips, and says "dang, I copped that at Hard Off months ago!", are they to keep it a secret too? Or if someone wins an auction for a "secret squirrel", are they to keep the secret torch burning?

    I ain't looking to salt in anyone's game... I'm seriously curious about this. It just seems to be a bit of a delicate area to tread in. I've noticed some Japanese sellers are already selling at least one of your squirrels, and adopting a similar "secret squirrel" style for some of their auctions.

    So I hear you on the checklist thing. So is there a way to share without making shit too easy? MP3 blog without record info? Secret squirrel style pics that force people to dig through many crates in person in Japan?

    Seriously, the days of removing the record labels when spinning, circa late mid-late 70s has gone.

    Music is for everyone & nothing worse than wankers who think they are the only ones with precious knowledge. I'd give them a serve if they displayed their arrogance in front of me. I've met some & they are right cunt rags.



    Like I never did believe that there are funk 45 collectors that bought up loads or raers & destroyed some so that they would be the only ones to have 'em. That i find hard to believe. That would then be a sickness, not an obsession. Pathetic sad attitude.



    Only the people who made them should have any say in the matter, not someone who 'stumbles' across them. Knowledge is power if you have the key, open it up & let the world in or die a sad lonely pathetic fuck.

    ^^ True to an extent, but I feel it sometimes feels like a cultish society with it's own secret handshakes, I mean we already have 'secret squirrels' & at times it verges on going up it's own arse with it's anal attitudes. Sure we all find some gems & I agree that we would probably prefer to let the knowledge be exchanged person to person, but I'd also personally like for someone like Phil to open up his vaults & share with us his collection of old school tapes. And I'm sure he gets a vicarious thrill out of peoples responses his unleashments. One doesn't want to become a musically hoarding fascist.

    What is unkown in certain quarters could very well be commonplace in others. I'm sure the Polish dudes were a bit 'neh' over the Brits hunger for their 60s jazz when it became the flavour a few years back. To them it was probably nothing more than about time & what's the big deal. but then Skowrnski, Namystowski, Bemibek, Niemen, etc are probaly commonplace there... but unknown elsewhere. Now we have comps coming out about Uruguayan jazz/funk. It's crazy obscure, but hell interesting. Apart from the liner notes, S.N.C. or Wax Poetics maybe will we be able to read or find out about these oddities. Yes I do agree it's a double edged sword. Freddie fresh's book has proved it already, but also opened my eyes to just how vast the world I'm immersed in really is. Shit scares me to death, but it's something I'm interested in & I have to embrace it as much as I deplore it. What was my world & a few others opened up & the whole frikkin' sky fell in. Right on top of my head. Will I ever get that Tim Greene & the 3MCs 12"? Look at the whole Conneticut hip hop releases on Stonesthrow. Shit is mad rare & now everyone is on the hunt for the Tootskee & Czar record. Took someone like Egon to want to share his knowledge with others instead of staying within the confines of his own record room.

    I guess I'm just a junkie for info & will take it from anywhere I can...and then share it myself with others.

    4 real, im all about sharing the information. i dont know if you remember that site TASMAN CONNECTION i did. i came under major attack from more than a handful of respected local djs and old school has been dudes because of it. i still cop flack over it. fact is i moved to japan, didnt have access to australian records, realized most of the aussie records are shit and got over people emailing me asking the same ol shit...

    and i dont really care about the secret squirrels if you know what they are... thats my hustle and i was just saying PERSONALLY i gotta keep it tight because Muros hommies hipped me to a few of those and dont wanna put the knowledge out there like that outta respect. at the same time, i wouldnt go and blab about RAJs secret squirrels over the net or SOULMANS secret squirrels just outta respect.

    but by all means do your thing. you know we both got different tastes as to what we consider dope or not, open drums or not anyhow, most of the files u sent me are of different taste to what ive dug so i would even like to check out what youre coming up on.... hit me up for that dig dude!! good luck.

    Word, Sheep... It's cool.

    I may or may not do it... Was a idea I had knocked around for awhile, and started looking into today when I was bored at work.

    The issue was interesting to me, because I have conflicting feelings on it myself. So I wanted to see what other people thought...

    Half of me wants to make a site with lotsa record porn and info that would be new to many people, and half of me wants to keep what I've learned, often with the help of others, on the down low... and only trade it with with other people I know who share the interest.

    Maybe a temple or ramen blog would be easier.

    And word, I'm broke as hell... But next month, I'll definitely hit you up sometime for a dig!
