I think most of the better stuff is 45-only... and that this thread is going to go nowhere unless jinx unbans hisself

  • So do you want a listing of all soul and funk from that area or just things similar to the Leon release?

    Peace,
    Mike

I'm stating the obvious here, but the Leon's Creation album is really derivative of early Sly & the Family Stone. If you like that sound and don't own all of their first four records (i.e., pre-"Greatest Hits"), that's the place to start.

You might also check out some of the stuff Leon Patillo cut with Santana, including a really faithful cover of the Leon's Creation song "Mirage."

The Viva Brasil LP is from the Bay area and it's great. Much better than the Papaya Wolf LP, which I suppose is its closest equivalent.

check out the 'Bay Area Funk' compilation put together by DJ Riddm on 'Luv N' Haight'. contains cuts by Little Denise, Johnny Talbot, TKO'S, and many more Bay Area artists from Hayward to Oakland, to Frisco. recommended.
