So I'm sitting here going through records looking for stuff to play tomorrow at this fundraiser I'm doing. So far, I've found:Gil-Scott Heron - "Inner City Blues (Poem: The Siege Of New Orleans)"James Brown - "When The Saints Go Marchin' In"Tom Waits - "I Wish I Was In New Orleans" I'm still looking for more. Any suggestions?Herm

You guys really like stuff like that?

I mean, I can picture Reynaldo lazing around his estate with his sandals dangling from his toes, but TheMack, I really would expect something with more death and destruction to appeal to you.

I was gonna say "Water Get No Enemy" but I don't know if that would be misconstrued as being insensitive.

    randy newman - louisiana 1927

    CHORUS
    Louisiana, Louisiana
They're tyrin' to wash us away
They're tryin' to wash us away
    Louisiana, Louisiana
They're tryin' to wash us away
They're tryin' to wash us away

President Coolidge came down in a railroad train
With a little fat man with a note-pad in his hand
The President say, "Little fat man isn't it a shame what the river has
done To this poor crackers land."

The Nevilles may have recorded it as well, but Newmans direct version may be better than Aarons vibrato.

John Lee Hooker Tupelo, Pop Staples does it on the Jammed Together record with Cropper and Albert King. Might be too depressing.

Freda Payne Bring The Boys Home Invictus 45 9092, should be easy to pick up at PDQ.

    Edwin Star War

    Temptations Ball Of Confusion

Aretha Franklin Precious Lord/You've Got A Friend

    Aretha Chain Of Fools

Staple Singers I'll Take You There

Lots of Curtis and the Impressions.

  • Okay, so I put together this little compilation CD to sell at the benefit tomorrow. It's not the most ethical thing to do seeing as how they're ALL downloads/CD rips (I don't have enough time to do an actual turntable mix), but since it's for a good cause I feel okay with it. Hopefully this will get some folks to come out their pocket a little. I put 'em in order according to emotion and overall feel, starting with odes to the city, getting into some raw ghetto shit, to some Vanguard Squadish revolutionary shit, picking it up again with some fun dancing-in-the-streets type shit, into some sad melancholy T.R.O.Y. music and finally ending it on a high note with a classic.

    01. Galactic ??? Welcome To New Orleans
    02. Earl King ??? No City Like New Orleans
    03. Elvis Presley ??? New Orleans
    04. Louis Armstrong - Where The Blues Were Born In New Orleans
    05. Dr. John ??? Sweet Home New Orleans
    06. Tru ??? Welcome To New Orleans
    07. Gil Scott-Heron ??? Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler) Poem: The Siege Of New Orleans
    08. Randy Newman ??? Louisiana 1927
    09. The Tragically Hip ??? New Orleans Is Sinking
    10. The Neville Brothers ??? Sitting In Limbo
    11. Duke Ellington ??? Blues For New Orleans
    12. Benny Moten???s Kansas City Orchestra ??? New Orleans
    13. Bo Dollis & The Wild Magnolia Magnolia Mardi Gras Indian Band ??? Handa Wanda
    14. Louis Armstrong ??? New Orleans Function
    15. Merrill Moore ??? Nola Boogie
    16. The Meters ??? Look-Ka Py Py
    17. Tom Waits ??? I Wish I Was In New Orleans
    18. Louis Armstrong ??? Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans?

I'm gonna sell 'em for $5. They're really low budget on account of time, just a CD-R, a Sharpie and a paper sleeve. I'm burning my ass off over here (and missing all the BBQ's, too!). 16x speed takes me about 5-6 minutes or so, so I keep running back & forth to my computer while digging through records to play tomorrow night.

If I can figure out how to zip a file, I'll send the whole thing to you via yousendit. If not, I'll try to send each individual song or just mail a CD-R to you. Give me a day or two and I'll figure something out.
