Not only teh vinyls

Hi. Been a while. So I stopped digging for rekkids. Yeah, I know, but I moved to a small regional town in Australia, and there ain't none here. But that damn magpie gene runs deep, so I still dig but for different shit now.

Watches, Scotch, bourbon, books, rugby jerseys (really)... the usual MCM ish... it scratches the itch.

Aside from records, what do you fine folks dig for, collect, hoard or covet?

P.S. Pap.

    Scotch

Same. Weirdly I’ll drop more on a bottle of something consumable than I ever did on a record (which can be enjoyed time&time again).

Port Charlotte, Ardnamurchan, Bhunnahabien, Bladnoc, Ledaig… indie bottlings too. Haven’t bought a bourbon in 8 years or more, all about that Scotch.

Books too, but a minor expense in comparison.

I've been collecting rare Mezcales and psychoactive infusions. This one has the venom and a chunk of fermented meat from a rattlesnake, quite an acquired taste. Supposed to give you visionary dreams. Only had a small copita alongside a bunch of other samples when I bought it yesterday so not sure yet about the effects.

Now you're talking. Im more an Edradour, Glen Garioch, Mortlach, Glenallachie type but fuck me if this years Kilkerrans haven't blown my knickers right off. That opened the door to Bunnahabhains & Benromachs which are currently kicking my arse.

Im all >46% NCF etc so have been loving the Bunna CS's and all the indie Bunnas as well - plus I managed to hit a run of indie sherry monsters as well I stocked up just before the prices went batshit too.

Kilkerran: the8yr Sherry cask is the pick of the bunch for me (peat + sherry is usually a great combo). I'm not a massive fan of the Speyside profile, and Glenallachie isn't quite there for me (yet - Walker's own distillate isn't due for a few years, had a Miekle Tor and enjoyed that though). I had some Glenallachie 15 and it was sweet, cinnamon... not many "whisky" notes, and I wondered if I'd be able to spot it in a flight of premium rums!

I reckon this would be up your alley: https://www.slijterijvonk.nl/nl/the-single-malts-of-scotland-ben-nevis-10-years-ol.html?srsltid=AfmBOor4__3Pf4SdRK21jCsqER7G53mh3BFLv-4SVLA8wVOVGu529NsW

I moved to Oaxaca in 2016 and it was like finding paradise. Never lived in the same region for this long in all of my adult life.

My kids are telling me I am to old for sneakers.

"Cold dead feet etc." is my response.

Street wear and sneakers are comfy. In the fall I'll dress up more but for day to day running around town I'm usually wearing sneakers.

It depends on the weather for me.  White soles only for summer or indoor venues.  I wear all of mine; I'm not archiving them in an airtight bag.

Walking around the ends, black or gumsole sneakers.  I know you're a Nike head Bill, I kinda got fed up of my AF1s always wearing through on the heels and have been on an Adidas streak for a couple of years.

Rain, I have some Adidas Gore Tex sneakers or my Clarks or Redwing-adjacent boots.  If I'm working from home, Adidas sliders.

    Scruffy af, I know

  • Graf books are my main other hoarding affliction. Just ordered the new Phase 2 in Italy as an Xmas present to myself.

Try and pick up any other cool paper I find in the flea markets when the records are dry. Comics, music books, skate magazines etc.

Also got sucked in by those Super 7 rap toys, just got a DOOM cereal box action figure and a KRS One By Any Means Necessary toy.

My son loves OG He-Man so collecting the reissues of toys I had in the early 80's with him is super fun.

Basically micro-plastic'ing my balls into oblivion while the world burns.

I wear Adidas UltraBoost Cold.RDY in the winter. They are water resistant and keep your feet warm.

AF1 soles are too chunky for me. I just have the one pair of skeleton AF1 for Halloween time.

I gave up on sneakers years ago after all my Nikes with an air-sole crumbled into dust.
Now I laugh at all these re-seller kids that brag that they have thousands invested in sneakers. That ish will be dust soon enough.
Now I just have a pair of ONs for walking.
I can't drink whiskey anymore, the hangovers the next day are next level.
For a while, I was going to Japan twice a year for work and bringing back 12 and 18-year-old Yamazaki for peanuts.
I would collect wine, but I drink it faster than I can keep it around!

Where are you living now NZ Shadow? Ever make it down to Sydney?

The 8YO sherry is the TRUTH. i LOVE the 2023 16 as well (more sherry in the mix). Re: Allachie/Walker - I rate the 10YO CS but the core range lacks - I'm not a huge Billy Walker fan - he sells other peoples distillate & the Dronach shenanigans were borderline fraud. (That said I have 2x 21Yr & 1x 18 yr Billy Walker Dronachs tucked away). I've been watching the price creep as well as the rebrand - & was stung by an Aussie-only vintage release, '2013 double sherry' - it is pure swill - young, hot, all cask & no substance. He even shot a short YT clip to promote it waxing lyrical over its "perfect balance" etc - more like he had some crap juice that he needed to offload quick. Anyway - Edradour 10 Signatory 46% is my benchmark dram - its $130 a bottle here & it shits all over that awful Allachie.

Good call on the Ben Nevis - I have amazing memories of their early-000s releases & SMS has always been a winner for me. Theres a Dutch indie called 'The Ultimate Whisky Company' despite the terrible name, they have never let me down & have been around for ages.

Dusty Nikes - Aww man, been there.

18yr Yamazaki - I bet you wish you'd stashed a few bottles away. I have the same with Macallan 18 - Back in the late 90s thru mid-00s I worked in bars & Macallan 18 was a regular pour. To the point that it was all id drink - I loved the stuff, I reckon I would have drunk at least a bottle a week for over 10 years. Them shits are pushing a grand a pop now. FFS.

Im up in the Northern Rivers, between Coffs & Byron. Dont get down Sydney way too often, Brisvegas is much closer when we want that city fix.
