I'm watching Broner/Porter. What's the deal with Broner? How much of a difference does an inferior second contribute to a fighter's career? Dude seems to have less than adequate coaching.
Comments
Broner's problem is that he lacks the guts to fight inside. It's silly that a guy will his skill set can't pot shot an opponent who charges straight in. All he had to do is stand in the pocket and pop Porter with hard rights as he came in (like Kell Brook did and spanked Porter's ass). Broner can't fight inside so opponents are going to crowd him as Maidana and Porter did to great effect.

Is he taking too many notes from Mayweather? Dude is more of a counter-puncher than anything from what I saw yesterday.
And my other question is, how many of these boxers today intentionally shy away from the combat, because of the post-career consequences (i.e. punch drunk)? You can get hit in the head so many times before your speech starts to slur.
If I were getting a million dollars for a fight, and I had a family, I personally wouldn't give a shit about whether I will be remembered as an "admirable fighter".
Been unemployed for the past week, and have been going to the boxing gym to hit the heavy bag mainly. Hurt my Left shoulder slightly, throwing left hooks lol Probably doing something awkward with that. Starting to do sprints again.....and hopefully get back into basketball shape.
on a heavy bag, dont try to punch all the way through the bag until you get the muscles around your joints a little more developed and used to the jarring impact. and remember to flick those wrists.
Hey Yuichi,
Broner should take MORE notes from Money May, who is great at slipping and countering on the inside. That tactic is why Mayweather is so great at neutralizing pressure fighters (as Kell Brook did in spanking Shawn Porter). His check left hook and straight right hand makes his opponents hesitant to punch. People don't fully acknowledge how great an inside fighter Mayweather is (and also throws hard body shots).
The heavy bag is good work, huh? When hitting the bag, flick your wrist and don't punch with full power. While in Konstanz Germany, me and the wife ran (and rode bikes) miles over the Swiss border while enjoying a post card-esque backdrop. Because their culture is so pedestrian (they bike or walk everywhere), it was good we're in shape. Keep up the good work, man. I'll be back at Retro Fitness at 7:30am sharp tomorrow morning (good to be home).

Yea, i'll remember that next time...
Are you supposed to flick your wrists for straights and hooks as well? or mainly just for the jab?
There's no doubt about Mayweather's brilliance. His most underestimated attribute may be that opponents seem to shy away from his counterpunches and because of that, become very tentative when attacking. When talking basketball, "pace of the game" is important, and whether or not you can make the pace in your favor. Boxing seems to be the same, and brawlers after the first couple rounds of having a couple clean hits, seem to be very tentative after they get hit with a few counterpunches; thus taking them out the game completely in the later rounds.
Germany sounds like fun. And yes, I've gotten myself up to about 5 rounds hitting it "okay". Sweat like crazy after about 20min. on the bag. Need to learn more fundamentals though, so i don't freakin' injure myself.
Broner isn't really even on my radar anymore though...I've been wanting to make a Boxing Headz thread for a while now to discuss who to look for in a post Mayweather/Pacquiao/Klitschko boxing landscape...there are some really interesting fighters that I hope get some of the shots/media-recognition that they deserve.
[strong]Heavy Weight to watch:[/strong]
Anthony Joshua. Massive dude who can move very well. Humble. Young. Can't wait to see what this guy does if he gets some truly big fights
[Strong]Welterweight[/strong]
Keith Thurman is a true welterweight that hits hard as shit. I hear murmurs that he might be the next dude to get a Mayweather shot. I have a feeling Mayweather does not want to see this dude in the ring. Mayweather would much rather fight Amir Khan, a less threatening fighter with a bigger name...I want to be wrong, though. I want to see Thurman fight big names...Canelo vs Thurman would be an insane fight.
Reminds me of Bruno..looks the part but that's about it.
This is Anthony's most recent fight and it demonstrates his skill a bit better. Still against a subpar opponent who had lost his last 3 leading up to this fight....
The next generation boxers to watch right now are:
-Terence Crawford
-Vasyl Lomachenko
-Guillermo Rigondeaux
-Genady Golovkin (though I want him to beat a 'real' middleweight)
-cosign on Keith Thurman (though he look a bit suspect against 'The Ghost' Guerrero)
-Kell Brook
-Nicholas Walters (beastly and big at featherweight)
-Rances Barthelemy
-Gary Russell, Jr.
-Leo Santa Cruz
-Jermell and Jermall Charlo
-Amir Iman
-Sadam Ali
-Omar Figueroa
-Demetrius Andrade
-Lateef Kayode
-Erroll Spence, Jr.
-Terrell Gausha
-Javier Fortuna (a bit rough around the edges)
I ride for those guys, but admittedly, most of them need stiffer tests to establish true contender status in their respective weight classes.

Indeed, I think triple G has crazy potential. My main worry about Thurman is his form. He is too eager to get in a slug fest and the best will pick that apart any day of the week.
This dude looked solid last Saturday.
about Keith Thurman. His relative lack of defensive discipline potentially will be his undoing. Watching Golovkin beat B-class middleweights is getting rather passe. I want to see him against Cotto, Quillin, Jacobs, or Lemieux.

The bits where they crawl around on the floor trying to whack each other in the balls just make me laugh. UFC stands for Useless Fucking Clowns.
Crazy.
Great fight, crazy ending. Vargas would not have gotten the KO. Fair outcome despite the Pat Russell blunder.

i just couldn't believe that finish.
It was nice to see it end sportingly on both sides. It could have gotten really ugly.
Nonetheless, that Vargas right hand at the end was the business. Wow!!! Timothy Bradley has some serious whiskers. That punch had knock out written all over it.

Thurman vs Collazo is going to be aired on ESPN Saturday July 11th. Should be a fun one to watch. Free brawls are always greatly appreciated, imo.

Hey Jectwon,
That could be an interesting matchup with Collazo's slick, counterpunching style against Thurman's power and range. The key issue will be whether Collazo can hurt Thurman to keep him honest (like he did with Victor[ia] Ortiz). Thurman will likely stop him, but I expect Collazo to win a few rounds.

Big_Stacks, you know a dude named Rob/Bob Rockwell? He was like 160 or 170.
Helps that I have all the time right now because I'm not working though!
I was watching the undercards of the MacGregor UFC wight at the same time so I kinda missed what happened with the ending. Collazo didn't come out of his corner? I'd like to get some info on what the hell happened there.
Hey Yuichi,
It's good to hear you're getting the hang of the heavy bag on dropping pounds. It's great exercise. No, I haven't heard of Bob Rockwell, but I see on Box Rec that he had only 5 fights. Ject Won, Collazo was stopped on the stool because he said he couldn't see due to a cut on his right eye. It was a good fight, and as I told the missus, Collazo was no walk-over. Thurman, to me, has defensive flaws that a sound, technical boxer can exploit. He is not yet in the A-class, in my humble opinion.

Big Stacks from Kakalak
Watching it on a casino TV not able to hear the sound made me focus on the fighting a little more and All I could think was how wide open Thurman was but someone would need to know how to take advantage of that like you said. Collazo just couldnt make it happen. Still a decent fight until the cut shut it down.
Hey Volumen,
Yeah, people get all excited about punching power and hop on an up-and-comer fighter's dick a bit too quickly. Sure, it's impressive to see them knock out guys on the way up, but these opponents are usually in the C- or B-classes at best. As they move up the ladder (against better-quality opponents), they start to get fewer knockouts and show more vulnerabilities. This is the 2nd fight in which I've seen Thurman have trouble with guys who know what they're doing. I don't think he is title-ready yet, as A-class dudes will exploit the shit out of his technical flaws.
Peace,
Big Stacks from Kakalak
Collazo was a tough fighter. But, to be fair, it definitely seemed like Thurman was hurting in his left hand. He was barely throwing hooks and stuff.
Same "un-tested" quality to Deontay Wilder as well? I hear you on the fighting B and C-class fighters though...
