That's that shit I don' t like

Ive pretty much been an avid rap/hip-hop fan all my life, beginning as a very casual listener in the very early 80s One of my first 45s was a Newcleus 'jam on it' - whistle 'just bugging', that kind of thing. There was a period from the mid 80s to the late 90s that I pretty much ate everything up that dropped. Still have a serious appetite for teh rapz, i think my posts in the rap youre liking thread are pretty obvious as far as revealing my taste in hiphop.

I was just having a conversation with some other older heads on wattsapp talmbout new stuff and some of them are into popular new joints like kendrick and made me realize although im a lifelong fan of the genre for the last 20 years my tastes have pretty consistently excluded everything on the mainstream and just under the mainstream radar. Pretty strange really and although i have a definite taste for boombappy eastcoasty stuff I can get down with pretty much everything and listen to a lot of new stuff (i fux with asap rocky clams casino, the union type shit for example)

So here is my list of shit i never really felt or severely disliked over the years (Ill be honest - I pretty much hated all of this with a passion)

Shit im not feeling but most rap listeners do in no particular order: the clipse, rick ross, lupe fiasco, jcole, kendrick lamarr, wale, eminem, d12, outkast (first album got burn, then their style changed for the worse), jay z, kanye west, 50 cent, all of g unit, mystikal, all of no limit, eightball & mjg, everything snoop dropped after doggystyle, dmx, ruff ryders etc., bone thugs n harmony, n.e.r.d. (hated it), most of pharrels output, tupac, puffy, mase and all of post biggie and craig mack first joints on bad boy, LONS and everything busta rhymes dropped, UGK, Mos def, talib kweli, common, Three6mafia, Beyonce.

Soooo... tell me strut... What seems to be the problem with my ears vis a vis the rest of the world? What kind of a listener do you think i am? What am i missing? What box would you put me in? Straight disconnected, old man rap head, or worse? Typecast me, do your worst...

You are generous and emotional. You are quite popular in your social circles for being a genuine friend to everyone. You value human relations the most and put the people you love above everything else. However, you also possess some negative traits. For example, you have a tiny penis and your breath smells bad.

No BS -- my first question is why the boiler plate dislike of so many (popular) artists? That type of attitude sounds like you are in your first year of college and really really want to impress someone.

I think you need to tell us your (not-so-hidden) agenda about what constitutes as "good, pleasing rap". Doesn't appear to be anything with actually rapping or lyrics.

If you are a member of Rock Steady Crew, (or perhaps European) I think I might understand.

I was this way, with rock and pop, for most of my life.
    If it's popular I don't like it.

It is not about the music it is about the image. The image of the music and my image of myself.

I have realized how stupid it is and am trying to get over it.

partied grudgingly in many clubs where they play shit from my shit list above.
Talmbout 'But I thought you liked hip hop?' yes... but... nevermind.'

But eh - europe. Admittedly gigs is where i got my hip hop fix - Hands in the air party partying is more in the funk/disco/ and occasional techno happenstance vein.

haaa well you have your answer. Honestly im really not on some 'ITMUSTBEBOOMBAP' stance. All the stuff ive listed i really dont like musically instinctively - although ive picked up records from those artists if they dropped stuff I did like (jay z big pimping w ugk, ehhh i think i have a copy of the hey ya 12"). You riding for jayz or busta lyricism? I never bought in to the andre3000 is the best rapper alive schtick. as for the not liking actual rapping or lyrics jibe - miss me w da BS.

Hahaa well I never hatted on pop or popular per se i dig pop music. Popularity or image is not a grounds for dismissal to me - more of a case of being jaded i suppose. But get the fuck off my lawn nevertheless - kids these days. Some 25 yr old dude at work was trying to talk to me about dj'ing and liking afro-rock and rap and dj shadow and being up on his music shit blablabla - at some point ODB came up and he'd never heard of him. never. heard. of. ODB = off the lawn.

well yeah. one thing I cant really get over is exact same flip of classic samples breaks with no extras, Jay Z is severely guilty of that. I mean the blue print sounded like some tired old shit to me when it dropped. I guess not so much for the kids to whose ears it was all new.
Made You Look is the way to reuse a worn out sample imo. Post 89 Straight up seven minutes of funk loops do not get a pass.

Tha Liks - Only When Im Drunk was a legit use of a Classic, and didnt take away from EpMD.
Purists might bitch ("be original fuck that") but that's an impossible stance in Hip Hop. Impossible.
The Jay-Z/Foxy Brown joint was considered a "throwback" by '96....when "Throwin' Back" was already an oiled trend by '96.

Yet Biggie gets a pass for Warning though, right?

  • staxwaxstaxwax 1,474 Posts
Yeah i thought warning was the shit. I dug only when im drunk too. First liks is a certified classic. New & improved flavours and stylings.

Staxwax, no love for Resurrection? I can do without everything else Common ever did, but that LP is top ten list. No I.D's production is just impeccable.

    b/w

Why is this surprising? Is there anyone here who likes (I mean REALLY likes) all of the artists listed? I have no time for anything that I don't REALLY like, therefore I love some hip hop and dislike a lot. Just like I love some jazz, dislike a lot. Making up ratios here, but I reckon the quantity of great music to average in any genre is less than 1%

Yes. 1% indeed. Just amazes me how consistently i dislike the stuff thats is embraced across the board. That NO Id production is indeed amazing. I remember taping the used to love her video off yo mtv raps and really liking it. Never really went in for the rest of his stuff at the time - he just seemed a little too soft, into himself, and cute for my taste - i already had my native tongues ish in that general pocket and didnt really feel common sense was adding much to the vein. then his continued catalogue got progressively worse and worse imo. On some rap for the ladies or - if you dont really like rap, youll like this type flow. Arrested development, another group thats was way too soft poppy and eager to please for my taste around that time.

The American South brought us jazz, rock-n-roll, and funk, but yeah, somehow when it comes to rap, it's only about bad taste. How dare UGK loop up some Curtis Mayfield and the Isley Brothers and rap in their own accents?

Obviously, this is a post about you and not the actual music itself.

yep. CMW was a bit of a second tier west coast group to me at the time but yeah they were first. That whole first Biggie album was in a league of its own from the get go though. Dreams also had an overused sample before the album dropped but Biggie got away with it. Easy mo bee and biggie should have been locked in a studio together they would have produced so many classics. Second biggie was a huge let down to me - to this day i dont fuck with hardly any of the post ready to die biggie stuff. kick in the door and hypnotize arent half bad but not on that level.

naw I was joking. southern rap is just something I could never really get with on the whole. felt like they took those das efx crucial conflict gimmicks i never liked to begin with to another dimension. I remember bone thugs was a joke to me when they first came out. That whole style had me rolling. Its a thuggish ruggish bone still brings a smile to my face for that reason. bbq, jazz, funk, lemonade and porches, however, i fully support. And ive always been a big geto boys and (early) scarface fan.

I massively preferred Biggie to MC eiht. And Ready To Die was so big and cinematic sonically, nothing CMW put out could really fuck with that. Some revisitations just work i suppose. I liked the whole petestrumentlas project too even if they were mostly over-familiar samples, including walk on by.

Ready To Die got its cinematic style from the West Coast/Chronic/& them.

not trying to be the poster boy for biggie smalls fandom by any stretch of the imagination. And big poppa was one of the corniest tunes on ready to die imo. UGK and CMW may have gotten there first, but they werent seeing BIG as an mc or in terms of production quality so that kind of takes the tired ass samples argument out of the loop doesnt it? Puffy was behind most of the sample selections on ready to die anyway if im correct.

Alkoholiks only when im drunk was dope as hell to me within the context of the whole album, west coast drinking rap riding a 'classic' loop, they got away with it even though no one was giving awards for originality of sample choice on that tune. Or saying they outdid epmd.
jayz and foxy corny as fuck and unoriginal - and very very late to the 7 minutes party.

Nah man, west coast rap, chronic, nwa, ice t, king t, above the law, the doc, boo yaa tribe i loved all that stuff but none of that was on my mind really when i first copped ready to die, although you're right I suppose, that record owes a lot to that cinematic style..
I wouldnt even put ready to die over any of those records. anyway you brought up warning, all im saying was I prefer that particular tune to the hood took me under even though they use the same source.

I still hate on tired ass samples generally and if you want to put ready to die in the 'played out because it uses a bunch of tired ass samples' category, be my guest. Thats not how I took that record in at all. And once again, i'm not waving the flag for biggie as the god of east coast rap at all.

So what about folks that dont know the previous 7 mins funk loop until Jay-Z/Foxy?

Do they get a pass if they prefer that version(or take Jay is a better MC) over EpMD & Tha Liks?
