The problem with saying 90% of the police is good, is that it assumes people are either all good or all bad.
Also it is a made up statistic, but 67% of all statistics are made up.
What we are seeing in NYC, is something close to 100% of patrol officers refusing to work yet, they show up and collect a paycheck.
The funeral photos I saw had all of the officers turning their back.
I wouldn't say the majority of NYC police are bad, but the majority are acting badly.
Their reasons for their actions are very weak.
The mayor is in charge of the police, not the other way around.
I agree 100%. Lack of respect is the cause of many of our societal problems. The NYC police should have respected the office of the Mayor and respected anyone in that position.....period. It's the office you are respecting even if you don't respect the individual. We have seen a plague of disrespect towards positions of authority starting at the top (President) on down. And this disrespect is easily justified by those who don't agree with the actions of those in positions of authority. Disrespect never solved a damn thing...ever.
I agree with Frank that police officers should address citizens with "Yes, Maam" or "Yes Sir". But these same citizens should show the same exact respect to the Police.....obviously that boat sailed long ago. Referring to the Police as "pigs" is something that came into vogue in the 60's and is still present today. It's a "chicken and egg" argument as to which came first...Police disrespecting citizens or vice versa. Regardless, until BOTH sides try to remedy this problem nothing will change.

When someone states "Fuck The Police" you are condemning 100% of them ....no one here supports condemning an entire group based on the actions of a minority within that group...except when it comes to the Police.

Police, like many workers in this country, base their actions on what their Union dictates.
I agree that we should not say Fuck The Police to all officers.
Police officers are neither all good or all bad.
The NYC police unions have all said they did not call for a work slow down or a show of disrespect to the mayor.
Police are one of a very few jobs that are represented by a union.
Look, it's as simple as that, if 90% non-criminal cops are covering up for 10% of emotionally unstable, mentally and socially challenged thugs then I say fuck all 100% of them.
They're all wearing the same uniform and that uniform turns them into one indistinguishable mass of people and nobody in their right mind should trust them any further as you could throw one of these overweight, unfit cretins.
It's not a good deal if your chances of dealing with the sociopaths amongst them are at 10% (let's stick with this unfounded number of 10% even though I believe the real percentage is much, much higher).
If the chance to win the lottery would be 10% then you'd be an idiot to not play the lottery. In the real world people who play the lottery are the idiots, just like people who trust cops.
I agree that "pig" is a term that needs to be changed. It's much too endearing. The pig, if kept in an ideal environment is a highly intelligent, sociable and clean animal. Completely un-like a cop. Cops are more like some smelly, undefinable glob forming microbes that fester where the sun never shines. They're the smegma of a sick and bedridden society that lacks the power to clean itself.

Oh....The Police Union has denied this.....then nevermind...it must not be the union behind all the disrespect towards the Mayor.

I get it....you hate all cops.....so short of having none, what would be your solution.
I promise you that if a young man with 100% good intentions pursued a career as a police officer for all the right reasons and was met with your vitriol from day one it wouldn't take long before he saw you as "the enemy".
The 10% criminal cop stat was such an exaggeration that even MLJ called bullshit on it. Unions protect bad cops more than their fellow officers do. Who the fuck wants to wake up and face hostile citizens everyday because of the actions of a few. The Union reps don't have to.
Why wouldn't they? Al is no longer the irresponsible guy he was during the Tawana Brawley days. Have any current objections about him?
The dimwitted fascists who run your state consort with Ted Nugent. That makes much less sense.
I agree....Ted Nugent has no place in politics.
The fact that you remember Tawana Brawley and the heinous false accusations that Sharpton made towards Police would lead me to believe most police officers remember it too. Aligning yourself with him when dealing with police issues is just as dumb as having Ted Nugent at your press conference.

Neither do the actual cops. The world you're imagining, with poor innocent idealistic cops having garbage and insults thrown at them day doesn't exist. In the real world cops get their asses kissed on a daily basis.
But that doesn't seem to be enough for some of them.
DiBlasio hasn't disrespected the cops by any reasonable standard. He had a necessary and honest conversation with his son about the way the world works.
Frank didn't say he hates all cops. He hates their culture. So do I. So should you, if you're serious about the moral code you claim to hold. The current work slowdown alone should make you condemn the NYPD, because they are now basically stealing from their employers.
I agree that we should not say Fuck The Police to all officers.

Thank you for posting 13 articles that prove my point.
You said that the police actions (slow down and backs turned) was dictated by their union.
I said that the unions say they were not.
Confirmed by the articles you posted.
No need to argue.
We both agree that Garner should not have been choked to death and his murderer should have been punished.
And that the police should respect the mayor and the mayor should respect the police.

No, it isn't. Sharpton was wrong about the Brawley case, but it's not like cops care much whether accusations against them are true or false. They hated Sharpton as much for his activism during the Louima case as they did during the Brawley case. Maybe more.

The point is that they hate ALL activists who come out against police violence. So you're advocating (once again) for kissing their blue asses by doing nothing, ever, that might rub them the wrong way.
Maybe the cops should grow the fuck up instead. When they have a proven record of being unfair to a community, they don't get veto power over who represents that community.

Maybe, just maybe, they hate the dude who ruined a cop's life and career with outright lies and never apologized for it more than just about everyone/anyone else. Just sayin'.
Maybe, just maybe, they hate the dude who ruined a cop's life and career with outright lies and never apologized for it more than just about everyone/anyone else. Just sayin'.
Could be. But if you replaced him with Abner Louima they'd be pissed about that, too.
Steve Pagones was an ADA, not a cop. And far from being "ruined," he became an Assistant State AG and won hundreds of thousands of dollars in the ensuing lawsuit.
Bill Cosby got involved even before Sharpton. Ooh, the irony.

Again, I agree with you.
The police unions give the police a license to kill.
After the Ferguson shooting Wilson disobeyed his superior's order to stay in his car and on the scene.
Instead he went directly to his union steward, the union provided him with a lawyer and 2 weeks to concoct his story.
Yes you are right, the unions have a problem with the mayor. The are preparing for contract negotiations.
No you are wrong, the unions never dictated that they turn their backs or stop doing their job.
But it hardly matters. I was just clarifying a comment you made about the union dictating the actions.
Not disagreeing with you that the union and mayor don't get along.

The Cosby angle is some real irony for sure.
Pagones was one of six people accused by Brawley, the others being nameless Fishkill police officers.
"When 28-year-old Fishkill Police Officer Harry Crist Jr., committed suicide a week later — likely over a romantic breakup and failing the New York State Police exam — Sharpton and his allies used the incident to accuse Crist of participating in the rape.
When Pagones, a friend of Crist, offered an alibi for his besmirched dead friend, he found himself accused of raping Brawley nearly three dozen times."

We agree...The Union did not put out a printed document saying to disrespect the Mayor. Their actions documented above and standing as leadership of the entire NYC force accomplished that.
Maybe, just maybe, they hate the dude who ruined a cop's life and career with outright lies and never apologized for it more than just about everyone/anyone else. Just sayin'.

And like I noted, it was a great career move for him.
So what "ruined" the cop, the accusation or the breakup/test failure? In any event it underlines the clannishness of the cops. They make false accusations against people every day in this country and never apologize.
But it's different when it's one of them. Then it's a tragedy.
Lemme ask a serious question here:
How many people on this board have had 1 interaction with a cop where you walked away and said "S/he's probably a good guy/gal?" My tally is fucking zero, and that includes cops who were supposed to be "helping" me or my family. Just throwing it out there.
I'm also big upping Stacks by saying show some goddamn maturity and respect and tweet/blog your outrage you fucking scrubs.
(As strains of "Do As I Say, Not As I Do" fill the room.)
It's called growing the fuck up.... I was a rebellious asshole when I was young like most people.....live and learn.
I've done my best to counteract my alleged white privilege most of my life by looking like a low life scumbag. Sartorial GQ threads be damned.
That's a recognized regional look down there. Every time I go down South I see plenty of ZZ Top looking guys walking around. That's not setting off cop alarms unless you add neck or facial tattoos or you have meth mouth.
