What's a good laptop, has to be rugged and withstand tropical conditions... ThinkPad?

I know... I asked similar shit before some years back... but what's the deal with current ThinkPad models? I have to buy a new laptop and want something solid that can take a beating and performs well under hot and dusty conditions as well as under high humidity. I'm finally and completely done with Apple, force-feeding that shit U2 record onto people was the final straw for me to never buy another one of their products.

They're not quite as heavy duty as they suggest. We have a few at the Hospital I work in and I couldn't 100% recommend them. Unless it was a really good price. They are tougher than the average laptop but not as tough as the price would suggest.

What type of specs do you suppose you would need, Frank? You might want to look at the Lenovo Edge (or E) series. I would shy away from windows 8 if you can (you can still find decent machines with windows 7 pre installed).

I need it mostly for digitizing records, photoshop and some very basic video editing...
    this one looks pretty good:

I was thinking more on the extreme temperatures tip...

But if I was worried about bumps and drops. I would first make sure I got a laptop with a SSD. I mean, if cost is an issue, I guess everything doesn't matter in the end. But I wouldn't suggest a regular hard drive.

Yeah, probably right. Frank if you really think you're going to beat the shit out of this thing, you might want to look at a Solid State drive. But it it's just slightly more rugged than normal usage you should be fine with a regular HD.

The one you linked looks pretty decent and a decent price as well.

If you don't mind putting down a few extra $s, an SS drive is worth it for more than just durability, the performance is also demonstrably better.

Thanks for the input everybody. I didn't even know about Solid State hard drives... I guess this should eliminate a lot of potential problems. During rainy season the humidity here is super high and I can feel my current laptop slowing down more and more with each rainy season. Definitely makes a lot of sense to avoid moving/mechanical parts wherever possible.

I guess this one should be a good choice then:
