    I read that thread years ago and it didn't smell right then either.

    If he wanted Monty to get paid how come he didn't just tell him upfront?
    Why didn't he just give him writing credit?
    Or any public recognition?
    Why make Monty lawyer up and jump through hoops?

    Monty was gracious enough to believe him but I'm not. You all can lap it up, I'll pass.

    Beyond telling his label, or his legal dept, which records he sampled, I doubt Bill has much to do with sample clearing.

    Point is he quickly and publicly, gave Monty credit and payment.

    This seems like it's pretty complicated since it's a cover song. Many years back my band used a sample of gangstarrs "just to get a rep". We attempted to clear said sample which actually went on to be pretty lucrative for us. They basically told us just go ahead and use it because the song is already entrenched in deep litigation from their uncleared sample of "e.v.a.".
