What do you use outside the house? I'm looking for something similar in size but better quality than the ipod phones...

Lol, it's hard to find that middle ground
Right now I've got a pair of Nocs NS400 Aluminums. I got them from the Apple store on an impulse buy for about $100. I would say they are the best sounding earbuds I've owned. Like any buds, the bass response really depends on how far / what angle you have them in your ears. But they sound great (I even use them to work on music on the go!) and I really like the flat cables. Minimal tangling.
But I have also used Urban Ears models before. I forget the two dif ones I had, but they were $60-80 range. I liked them, but would probably rather spend the extra coin on the Nocs again if I had to go buy a new pair tomorrow.
Hey J**l - have you looked at some of the Sennheiser joints? They're pretty low key design wise but should sound good.

So they sound great and I'm not stressing about damaging or losing a $200 pair of headphones. Not the best if yer ears are big, though.
I've been using buds for 15 years, and they've not affected my hearing. And I am 46.
Eh?
Half-past four.
Srs doe, I don't have 'em on insane volume, I suspect this is the reason why my ears still work. I hear yoot and yoot on the train blowing up dey iTing with the pure tinny static; they have somehow appropriated discernable external volume level with how Seriously They Are Into Music. Their (hearing) loss.
I had a pair of good Sony buds, MDREX71s, for 10 years. Then some Sures, which had foam buds that tore up on repeated cleaning removal and were in all honesty no better for twice the money.
Now using some Beats which I am sure are good fakes, but they sound fantastic (I A/B'd them against the Sures and tossed the Sures). Bass is like a head-on submarine crash.
I used to use those and they sound INCREDIBLE and are really confortable. The only reason I don't still use them is that they are "open" to the point that others can hear what you're listening to (unless you listen quietly, I guess).
