Dipole Antennas and Tube Receivers

Has anyone built one of these using 300 ohm twin lead? I was going to put one in the atttic. Is bigger better? Is it better to set it up vertically or horizontally? Most of the statitons I listen to are comming from NYC about 25 miles due west, but the classical station is coming across LI Sound from the North, but that comes in pretty clear as it is. Should I leave the line antenna that comes out of the back of the tuner attached, or do you take that off when you attach the dipole? I'm using a Bogen RF-35 integrated receiver and the line antena is just a two inch wire coming out of the back of the unit and attached to the 300 ohm screw. A twin lead would attach to the 300 ohm and the ground.
Also, has anyone grounded an amp by running a line to the center screw on a wall outlet. I get a bit of hum even with the volue turned all the way down. I've heard of people using cheaters or breaking the grounding pin off, but mine is a two-pronged to begin with.
