This one was a baby, maybe 3". I saw a larger one in the garden the other day, ran inside to get the camera and then failed to locate her again. Then we had a 5" one on the bedroom a few nights ago, not a tarantula but something large and ugly. I just threw it out the door with a flipper (next thing available). Spiders don't creep me out really but I'm really scared of these damned large centipedes around here, a while back I nearly grabbed one when getting fire wood from outside.

Those things freak me the fuck out, I'm really glad I don't have to worry about them here in the northeast.

the large spiders make for good company. I spent new year's at my brother's house in the Amazon region and there was a large one that was always hanging out in the bedroom. I didn't mind seeing it, it was actually stranger when I didn't see it, since we kept trying to figure out where the fuck it went.

the last time I had been to that area (Alter do Ch??o, best place to go if you visit the Amazon) about 10 years ago, an american cousin of mine was traveling with me. We slept on hammocks on the porch of a house right by the river and he was the only person who went through the trouble of setting up a mosquito net, claiming he would sleep better not having to worry about bugs. When he woke up there was a tarantula chilling inside the net, about an inch from his face.

Last night I found the 3rd one in our house within only a few weeks... first one was in a shoe, I noticed the web and dead bugs in it and was about to clean it out with a paper towel when I had 2nd thoughts and shook out the shoe over the toilet, out falls a black widow... 2nd one (the one in the picture) was in the hallway and the 3rd one was in a web attached to the iron gate in front of our bedroom door. These guys are seriously freaking me out. The bite is supposed to sting the shit out of you for about half a day but very rarely seems to have serious consequences for humans, I'm really getting worried about our dogs though and now seriously considering to call in pest control.

Don't mess around with Black Widows, the bite is more serious than you think. When I lived in New Mexico they were in lots of people's garages and closets, one of my neighbors teenage daughters ended up in the hospital from a bite after putting a shoe on without checking. For you and your pets, call a professional and stay on it.

Thanks for the advice. Especially after doing some research about what a bite can do to a dog it seems like the better idea to talk to a specialist. Maybe they can physically check all around the house and remove them without having to resort to insecticide. Our house is large, has a big courtyard and lot of other outside spaces, spraying the entire property would be disastrous for all the other insects and small animals around of which there are many.

Tarantulas are the big hairy puppy dogs of the spider world.....find them here all the time and my kids would play with them when they were young....pretty harmless.

    b/w

Those small sneaky Brown Recluse and Black Widows scare the shit out of me.

That's a great picture. And yeah, black widows are creepy. I encountered one once in the basement laundry room of my old place. Walked in there and saw a spider in the corner and didn't think anything of it, then it turned a little and came into the light a bit and I saw what kind of spider it was. Holy adrenaline rush!

There it is! Took a while. I knew this couldn't be about spiders.

    (Yes, I'm jealous. And joking.)
