One I got out the other day is Levon Helm's RCO All Stars.

it may be an obvious choice, but still:

I like it better than any Beatles album because it doesn't contain any Paul McCartney songs.

And MJ had solo joints before Off The Wall but was still in The J5 and even in The Jacksons after/during OTW(Triumph) and Thriller(Victory).

Kool Keith - Dr. Octagon was a trio/collabo. Sex Styles was his 'official' solo debut.

There are numerous jazz sidemen that went on to drop their own flavour of awesomeness.

    So there's this:

But I guess that's also muddying the waters. I guess we are talking groups with vocals.

I was going to go for "Off The Wall" but it was, like, he never fully left.

    "Nightfly" already done. WMIC.

    But wait... Perennial Strut Fave:

    And... from the leftfield...

All By Myself was actually his solo debut after leaving the Temptations, but I ride for this one too.

Now I think of it, Chaz Jankel's first LP after the Blockheads is a favourite.

Confusingly titled 'Chas Jankel', had some brilliant cuts:

    Ai No Corrida
    Lents Latina
Am I Honest With Myself Really?
    Fuse

    So, so good

Some of these being listed are just first solo records that don't represent the artist actually LEAVING their group.

I try so hard to get into this album. Girlfriend is MY SHIT(the sister in that video is right up there w/ Tracy Reed), but after that its a wrap.
Its funny cause the Larry Blackmon shoulda kinda worked. He was still relevant in 85/86. But no hit singles

The next New Jack Swing album is where the jump off was. You never hear any of the singles from the first album after that.
