Wasn't dressed up obviously. But at least that lame shirt...with a collar and buttons...gets me in the club that has a dress code. Plus, my curly hair is 1000X's more stylish than a bent sorority girl baseball cap.

And as far as his set, there are a million happy mediums between playing only shit that people in attendence know AND nothing at all that people in attendence know.
And Club Moody is better known as your own fucking record room.
I don't see as a club promoter booking DJ Shadow that you would expect him to play Ke$ha and not $1000 Russian psych jawns.
Whoever booked him is an idiot and it seems pretty wrong to yank him when surely there was probably lots of people who would never go to that club but went to specifically see him and got screwed.
No idea why anyone would defend the club/promoter in this thraed.....
The promoter and the crowd should have known what they were getting into. Shadow and his agent should have known too. Either way getting the elbow 20 mins into a set is a joke.

R**er**, I'm not clonning. I just thought it appropriate to dig up that photo.
So now promoters, are allowed to be the artistic directors for performers they don't even know?
I haven't bought a shadow record since last century, find him boring, but i cannot in anyway agree with this line of reasoning that the promoters hold all the cards in a musical performance.
No, but sometimes it's down to the artist*.
* they should've given him more than 20 minutes though!
I caught the show in Detroit. Just a few points and observations....
The triphop sample spotting crowd of yesterday is long gone, you are at now home with your wife and kids, no?
There were lots of younger people in attendance who had no idea who Shadow was, they were there to party with a 'big name DJ', and he was aware of this. The scene was a strange mix of ravers and fans.
Shadow gave a similar intro speech as the one in the clip above. And it did not come off as a disclaimer or in the least bit pretentious. If you paid $20 to see a DJ you would expect them to say something, right?
For those who have seen his sets throughout the years, you have seen something different each and every time. Some were better than others, but regardless, different each and every time. You can like it or not, but do you really expect him to play the same material from '96?
Im sure Shadow knew what he was letting himself in for with this gig, it didn't take much for me to work out what this club is about and I live 6000 miles away and have never even heard of it until this thread popped up, Shadow said he had been wanting to play there, he must have known whats up.
"the owner makes the rules and that's it! I'm sure he never heard of sonny stitt"
i am a former semi-stan of shadow's from the early 90's (a bunch of us are i bet) and i turned the corner with his music and choice of facial hair long ago but this is just a ridculous, humilating thing for the club to do to him. he has earned enough credibility in this scene to do pretty much whatever he wants onstage... i hope this story travels far and wide and that other name dj's boycott that joint.

Harv, if dude was from Texas you'd be on a flight to stage a protest.
What if they booked Screw (I know, not possible) and did this? You'd expect Screw to dress up and play the jams?
Screw wouldn't have signed up for that bullshit to begin with.
Bad example.

Screw also woulda had an entourage that woulda made that club owner immediately regret his decision to pull him.
In fact, they wouldn't have even let dude approach the booth like that.
Why is this happening to a DJ and not "musicians" or bands? Would they do this to turd bands Seven Mary Three, Third Eye Blind, or Oasis? Probably not.
Its distasteful and disrespectful
This happens to bands.
When I lived in Syracuse all the rock clubs had rules (for local bands) regarding what they were to play.
They couldn't play more than 25% originals.
They had to play songs from a provided list or current top 40 album hits.
Many cities/clubs are like that.
When I used to go out to hear rock bands I never saw a band pulled, but I saw many a band leave a crowd disappointed and/or angry.
Sometimes because they refused to rock, insisting on playing their artistic attempts at jazz or avant.
Sometimes because they refused to play their hits.
Sometimes because they played one short set with no encore.
Sometimes because they sucked.
But in every case they were honoring their artistic vision.
I'm talking about big name bands here.
As for Shadow, he will do just fine, the Mansion will do just fine.
Shadow, hopefully, will not get/take bookings into clubs where he has to play club hits.
Clubs, Hopefully, will not book him hoping to hear club hits.

This all reminds me of the time I had a knife pulled on me in San Jose for playing... and I quote, "that gay ass James Brown music". Ahhh, good ol' San Jo'.
I only play a handful of shows every year, but I also turn down a shit ton... mostly from friends or friends of friends looking for a Dj for their lame house party, lame startup launch party, etc. and my reply is fairly standard, "sorry, I'm more of a specialist DJ... not the right fit for your event". If I catch a whiff of potential douchebaggery, then I'm out. But hey... it's not my job so I can be that selective. If it were, I'd be up in that pool spraying champagne with Party Rock on repeat like it was my... uhhh... job.
But it's real sad to see this happen to Shadow... dude should definitely still be at a level where he can have an audience full of people there to see him... not some mixed in with a generic crowd. Clearly a severe mismatch between the talent and the venue, but it doesn't really matter who's to blame... I'm sure he'll be a bit more selective from now on.
Plus, he wasn't even dressed properly for such a club.
:killin_it: he does have the dork look down pat. but dude your fantasy scene of screw being protected by his armed homies at all times is suspect b/w mad funny
I can picture the club owner to be some coked up Borovian doing lines in the backroom - straight out of a GTA cut scene - who asked his fresh off the boat cousin who to book.
WHO?! Deejay Szjadow? Okay i book him.
Only to find out he hates him on the night.
This All Basses Covered set is a tour shadow is doing - probably playing more or less the same set every night - pulling the guy 20 minutes into his routine is straight ignorant. Shadow is going to come out of this looking good and serious dj's / acts are going to think twice about playing the mansion after this.
Anyway the whole turn of events is pretty damn funny you have to admit, its a post modern embarrassment schadenfreude sm??rg??sbord.
And I love Endtroducing btw. You diss endtroducing you diss yourself. shit is classic as classic comes.

"Can you play some New Order?"
LOL
You stand in line at your own gigs? Do they ID you too??
That's Gross
Yes, the dude who wears women's spandex should be the one chiming in right now.
awesome

Anyway, everyone had a good time. The end.
I don't think you're ready for this jelly.
Mansion Nightclub is hyping this video.

But what would he have worn? 'Cause I bet he'd look simply faaaabulous in meggings.
I thought he'd have an entourage to protect him from "wearing" that??
Huh?
Actually, nevermind, I'm going offline for the rest of the day.
