I'm talking about songs that arrange intros that don't always come back into the song so they're the one and only time you get to enjoy them. For example:

Isaac Hayes - Ike's Mood. Sorry, no decent YouTube worth posting.

This is still a great track but goes down hill after the killer intro.
Don't know why they decided to change it to the boring/monotonous baseline.

    Love this horn line

  • So many other hip hop samples fit the description - Charmels "As Long as I Got You", Marva Whitney "Unwind Yourself" etc, etc...

This kind of describes the whole point of sampling, no? To extend a part of the song that is dope but woefully short.

*edit* I guess this doesn't really count as a 'change up', but I've always liked how this song intros into the song.

More of a rock intro, with nothing to do with breaks, beats, funk

Which makes me think about songs that have sections that are totally different songs.
Aretha - Respect - the sax solo has nothing to do with Respect, and was actually lifted from a different song that King Curtis was working on for a solo project.
Derek & Dominoes - Layla - Bobby Whitlock's piano interlude (the best part of the song) has nothing to do with Clapton's ditty.

Moving away from Allman and Aretha, Fleetwood Mac's Oh Well. The first half is an annoying blues rock song and the second half is a haunting guitar instrumental.

    End hijack.
    Great topic.

Not to say the rest of the song isn't one of the best funk songs ever made (imo), that intro is killer...

  • There are so many one-off hooks in this song, its pretty incredible. The intro, in particular, is something to behold.
