DJ's/musicians question

The Liknuts post got me thinking about those on this fourm who actually make a living off of their music. Even though we don't know for sure what they make per show currently. It's most likely not what they used to make bitd at the height of their careers. It got me thinking about the following questions.
Is it a reality that at one point in your career this might happen to you?
How do prepare for a possibility of something like this happening?
I would assume fan bases eventually dwindle down over time and you acquire new ones or attain die hard fans ( is it a revolving door?). If some of you don't end up getting the industry "push". Do you bow out gracefully when it no longer pays to produce your musical art or do you continue regardless of the outcome?
Sorry if these questions don't make sense, I am just trying to drum up new topics for discussion and do my part to contribute to the fourm.
