Suicide were great. I saw them open for the Clash in 1978, and most of the audience hated them, but I thought they were fascinating.
Cop the first self-titled album on Red Star and the second self-titled one on Ze, and try and find the Dream Baby Dream 12" (also on Ze, but available on Celluloid as well), and then take it from there. Alan Vega has a few good solo joints as well.
I like the sound of that book.
Not sure how much original research was done, but it's assembled really well, and it definitely made me think about the close proximity and overlap of the different NY scenes in the seventies. Of course, you knew these things were happening at the same time, but it's still a trip to read about seminal moments happening at the same venue, or the same block, or the same day.
