There are quite a few albums of his that I consider essential: Birth of Cool, The Prestige Period (all 5 albums are great: Relaxin', Cookin', Steamin', Workin', and Walkin), Kind of Blue, In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew, and Get Up With It. Also, one of my favorite Miles Davis albums is the soundtrack to the Louis Malle film Ascenseur pour l'??chafaud (Elevator to the Gallows). Highly underrated album.

Completely agree regarding Ascenseur pour l'??chafaud.

For me the BeBop period is WAY MORE interesting than the electric stuff. Without limiting it to a few albums, I would recommend anyone who wants to dive in but not splash out to look for this 20 albums on 10 CD box that came out last year:

Click on the link and look at the reviews for a full track list.

The box does not seem to be available in the US. Sorry.
