if you don't mind modern pressings, you can pretty much build a library of "crucial" Jamaican 45's from a website like Ernie B's for probably less than $5 each.

as for originals, you can find thousands of amazing JA 45's for under $10 each but condition will always be an issue, including pressing flaws. it's a bitch finding clean copies of things you want, even the classics.

Jamaican is a really, really broad term as far as buying 45s goes. Latin kinda is too. Plus the "mexican bidder" will see to it that you never pay less than $10 anything 60s-JA related.

you don't have to buy on eBay, do you? I have a decent amount of JA 45s and I have never bought a single one online.

(edit: not true, I have done a couple of orders with Ernie B's of represses before, like mentioned by me above. But I have never bid on a reggae 45 and any vintage press JA 45's I have were bought at a store or swap)

  • The number of quality Jamaican (reggae, ska, rock steady etc.) 45s is truly mind-boggling.

True, but it really depends what you're after stylistically and how many Jamaicans live in your city.

  • primarily interested in 60s rocksteady, if those can even be copped for cheap.
latin? same era, 60s early 70s.
    no represses.

who is this "mexican bidder"? i think i remember reading a little about him on another thread, can't remember where.

    thanks.

Well, not from anyone who knows what they are doing. Finding the OG titles in decent condition is tough at this point in time. That doesn't mean you won't find them cheap if you look around, but the market price is higher than that.

    Ugh, it's a long story...

I'm still not convinced the the Mexican Bidder is just one person, or even Mexican for that matter.

Back to the original question, $10 seems like a pretty low ceiling if you're talking quality 60s OGs. $15-25 would get you a lot of good pieces though. If I were you I would browse the records>reggae & ska>7" category on ebay, listen to clips, and figure out what you like.

Im pretty sure this a 10 dollar tune or so, and both sides slay:

    no represses.

It's pretty easy to do some online research.
Grab a book or two with a solid rock steady section and see what is listed as classic/must-have/foundation.

Deadly Dragon sells by section and has sound clips.
Me and You on a Jamboree has a terrific selection to browse through.
Roots Archives is a great site as well.

Treasure Isle is the label I would start with, Duke Reid productions.
Phil Pratt and Derrick Harriot are two other producers to check for.
Each 45/artist can lead you to the next like a crumb trail.

Decide what is crucial for you.

I did really well at the Deadly Dragon store front in NYC this summer. Boxes of 45s for days. Some pricey stuff but a ton of 10-15ers too.
