On the surface it would seem like that. But I think it's a much more important part of Aussie culture. You don't see 50 year old business men calling each other dude in the US, not everyone uses certian slang. But mate is pretty much used by everyone in Aus. Plus, as the article states a lot of people are just mad this guy is trying to make people so stuffy and formal. I don't blame them.

I have been hearing "dude" used a lot lately, dude. Mostly younger people though.
I don't think you'd see the security guards at the white house or congress addressing anyone informally.
