NYC Museums

i am heading out east for a Yale graduation, and my lady and i are going early to dip into the city for a night (this Friday). we got a room in the wall street district, and records and food should be pretty much covered (unless there is some amazing eatery you want to shout out). i think we are going to visit ground zero, since we will be staying fairly close. my wife hasn't been to NYC since her elementary days, so we were thinking of hitting a museum. i was leaning towards the Natural History Museum, but want to see what the plethora of NYC strutters thought about our choices. we love art, but science can easily trump it. any help would be greatly appreciated!

The Frick is an excellent museum that is often less crowded and overwhelming.

Mostly Euro/Old Masters stuff, if that's your thing.

Right next to Central Park and other museums.

The Museum of Natural History is amazing, but also a huge all day endeavour. If you're just in town that one day and want to do shopping, Ground Zero, etc, you won't really have time to take in all the museum has to offer.

I'd say if you're in the Wall St area you should check out the Museum of the American Indian on Bowling Green right by Battery Park. Its free, not very big, but really nice.

I don't know what their big exhibition is currently, but the American Folk Art Museum is often worth checking out and it's seldom crowded.

I can't stress Brooklyn Museum enough. Plus if it's a beautiful day you can hit the botanical gardens, or just hit Prospect Park (both are right next door.)

It's definitely more than you could possibly take in during a short visit, but I feel obligated to mention the Met. The Pacific Rim room rules.

i just spoke to a friend that said the same thing. he said the commercialism they allow there is depressing and offensive, it has been crossed off the list.

  • I think the Met of Art and Met of Natural history are free on the weekends. I highly suggest the Museum of Natural History.

Another option is the check out the new park called the "highline" in the meat packing district and then go gallery hopping. These are all free.

No, but you can pay what you can afford - they have suggested fees of $20 and $16 respectively.

    Here's the deal on deals:

the bigger institutions are a freaks, children and tourist nightmare on the weekends.

i would highly recommend avoiding that on the weekends and try a weekday afternoon.

there are lines at the MomA on the the weekends. they are all must see places but just so damn obvious they get swarmed but every tom dick and harry thats in town.

right now Gagosian gallery is showing Picasso paintings of one his ladies. I was told its a great show.
walking through Chelsea wont be as crowded as museum mile or any of the big spots.

seeing the big as blue whale at the museum of natural history is worth ten dollars easily. but too many kids.

museum of the city of nyc,sex museum, the police museum, etc. so many good spots in this city.

I go see a lot of art, and Chelsea is an easy way to see a lot of wildly inconsistent art in a day. Yes, that is a recommendation.

Seriously, you can walk the highline, see a few shows, get a drink.... see a few more, walk outside, and when you are done you're done. Go to dinner.

The Gagosian Picasso show is like a museum show- seriously, folks can hate him as a player, but Gogo's game is crazy. He is mounting a museum show a summer these last few years (Picasso x 2, Monet, P. Manzoni). Shit is impressive, and great, and free.

Mark Grotjahn on 20th at Anton Kern is total fucking facemelt.

Honestly, after that, your results may vary, depending on how much contemporary art bullshit you can stomach- and I get that.
But, it is something better than a good walk spoiled.

Or, if you're still feeling that free-steeze, the DeKooning show at Pace on 57th is H.O.T.

get there a lil early (say 15-20 min) if u want a good seat... fat cat is fun, in a college coffeehouse way; lots of diff beers on tap, pool, ping pong, and board games... the seating is mostly old couches...

NYC was the bees knees! the native american history museum was awesome (and relaxing), thanks to whoever recommended that. naomi shelton was amazing, she sounds so great live, and is the nicest person on the planet. the fat cat was a really interesting place to see her perform. a-1 and good records were great visits. getting drunk in that city is fucking expensive.

for future search purposes: i cannot recommend the Andaz hotel enough, and our room rate was dirt cheap.

If you play your cards right, getting drunk in NY can be very cheap... A goal for next time.

That's why I take out-of-town visitors there. It's a nice contrast to Times Square

    ha!

my first soiree into Mars Bars about a month ago included a dude getting glassed in the face which brought with it about zero acknowledgement from the other patrons or even bar tenders. then moved to a women dry heaving as she debated about going into the bathrooms there (albeit they might be the gnarliest in the city). and climaxed (ayo!!) with a dude taking out a hammer and nails and using them to showcase his talents of absorbing a 4 inch rusty nail inside his urethra.

quality night all around. shame this place is closing.

That sounds about right. Under no circumstances should anyone ever even approach the bathroom.

And the best part is, I bet a lot of the folks reading this think you are exaggerating.

Its funny, i was just by the Mars recently and wondered if it will stay around.

A decade ago when you were smashed 4 am on a tuesday down there, they were one of the only spots open just to get a cold one.

Its not a hang out spot at all. Just a last resort spot.

Word I heard is that Mars Bar, Pink Pony, and Max Fish are all closing, although Max Fish got an extension on their current lease for one more year. They're getting priced out of the neighborhood.
